Corn reaction - itchy skin?

Post by humbird753 »

Hi,

I have a sister who lives many states away from me, so we don't see each other often, and don't talk on a regular basis. I told her about my MC issues several years ago. She has recently started emailing me, and said she is having intestinal issues as well. She said she is GF. She also said it wasn't until she went gluten free that she began to notice she was reacting again. She said she bought a bag of pretzels made from corn, and ate a whole bag of them one weekend and ended up having terrible stomach pains (which does not surprise me). The part that confused me was that she also experienced itchy skin and at times will scratch to the point where she has sores on her skin. She decided this was a reaction to corn. Is that possible? I thought the itchy feeling would be mast cell related.

Yes it is. It's somewhat rare, but it can cause serious symptoms. Here's a link to a website devoted to corn allergy:

Tex, would that make corn a IgE allergy, rather than the IgA food sensitivity?

It's interesting that my sister says she started having her digestive issues 3 years ago which would mean she started the same age I did (56 years old). She is currently asking me to recommend medications I've taken or professional doctors/specialists. I responded by telling her I don't take any meds for this, and I don't utilize any doctors either. I see my doctor only for my annual check-up, and she has agreed with what I have been doing to hopefully bring this into remission. I did recommend this web site, and told her simplifying diet and supplements is a good first step. I've told her about your book. My sister majored in biology in undergrad so I believe she will have a better understanding because of her science background. I haven't gotten to the point of advising Enterolab testing, but plan on recommending that as well.

Paula,

The skin symptoms would have to be due to inflammation resulting from the production of IgE antibodies, and if the the rash is chronic (which it apparently is), IgG antibodies (when exposure to an IgE-associated antigen is frequently repeated, or continuous, the immune system produces IgG antibodies, which marks a chronic reaction).

The GI symptoms could be due to either an IgE-based reaction, or an IgA-based reaction (or a combination). An IgE-based gut reaction would typically result in any symptoms that began within 10 to 20 minutes of eating, whereas an IgA-based reaction would typically result in symptoms beginning at least several hours to a day or more, after eating.

And our pondering that people only started to react to corn once it was hugely genetically modified.....

In America they keep saying GMO corn is the same as the non GMO and should not have to be labeled any different.

Then we hear it is so different it is patented and the companies try to sue if any corn near the fence cross pollinates

Makes almost as much sense as telling us how safe we are from ebola while they are wearing hazmat suits!
