probiotics

Post by ldubois7 »

Hi again!

I also want to start probiotics very slowly, again. My ND suggested Culturelle. Any thoughts? I have found far more expensive brands, but wonder if they wouldn't be better.

I can't eat fermented foods to get my probiotics, as I seem to react, so I thought if I started very slowly with some supplements, I'd have better success.

Thanks!
Linda :)

Linda,

The cognoscenti, such as Dr. Lewey, in Colorado, recommend VSL#3 (for it's high bacteria count and other reasons), but I have heard good things about one of the newer products from Culturelle that was discussed here a while back (unfortunately I can't remember the product name). Hopefully someone else is much better acquainted with Culturelle's products than I.

Of course there are numerous versions of VSL#3 also, so you would have to look at the options.

Good luck with this project.

Tex,

Doesn't VCL#3 contain dairy? That's why I rejected it a while ago when I was looking, unless they have a version I couldn't find.

There's always Prescrip Assist...I had thought about that, too... and Culturelle has a vegetarian and a digestive support that look interesting.

Hi Linda,

I've taken both. The VSL 3 is pricey. The culturelle is much more affordable. I had no problems with either. I stopped taking them as they didn't seem to do anything. (I took them for about 6 months trial if I recall.)

Yes it does. I thought that they had a dairy-free version, but I can't find one either. Here's what their FAQs page says about it:
Can my patients take VSL#3 if they have intolerance to dairy products?

VSL#3 products may contain trace amounts of lactose [0.1g per 100g] and dehydrated skim milk or milk protein (casein and beta-lacto globulin of less than 2mg/Kg).
Frequently Asked Questions

So IMO, with your heightened sensitivity level, VSL#3 probably wouldn't be a good choice for you.
