Tex....Vitamin D3

I am taking 15000 ius a day, and my level is 39. It has dropped in spite of the amount I am taking. Granted there is way less sun than there was, it's cooler, so I am more covered up, and I am not at the pool as much as I was.

Vit B2 is <4. Is that OK?

Hi Lesley,

That's a heck of a note, but please don't feel like the Lone Ranger. My vitamin D level dropped from 95 in May, to 58 in October. :shock: And I was taking 3,500 IU of vitamin D supplement every day, which shouldn't have been necessary, because I get plenty of sun exposure here in Central Texas all summer. The only thing I can think of to blame it on was the kidney stone issue, and the inflammation it caused in my guts. :shrug:

It's beginning to become pretty clear that some of us use up a lot of vitamin D when we have some sort of inflammation active.

Don't worry about the D2. It always tests less than 4. I don't understand why they bother to measure it.

Tex I am taking 15000! Do I take more? I know I have inflammation going on, and there has been a huge amount of stress. My gut is improved, but by no means N. I still see mucous, though WAY less. Sometimes floaty, sort of jagged edges, and sometimes pretty thin. Still, it's spontaneous, and I need less of the lactulose to keep it going. Once a day now, and I play with the dose.
I have some joints that are inflamed. It's hard to figure out what to do.

Yes I know. And that's a problem, because that's already 3 times what's considered to be the normal average daily usage. Obviously your body is utilizing it, though, rather than stockpiling it.

Since your vitamin D supplementation is already so high, if I were in that situation, I believe I would try another twist. Rather than adding additional vitamin D, I would add some vitamin A. Are you taking any vitamin A?

While there's been some evidence presented in the past that vitamin A reduces the ability of vitamin D to enhance calcium absorption, recent research shows that the two have a synergistic effect against autoimmune reactions. Note that previous research suggested that the animal form of vitamin A (retinol) in amounts larger than about 2,500 IU might have a negative effect on vitamin D performance, but the beta carotene form (from plants) did not have that effect. Here's a link to an article that discusses this synergistic effect, and it appears that the retinol form of vitamin A was used for the research.

Also note that while vitamin A and vitamin D are just vitamins, the active forms are hormones, with the ability to alter genetic responses.

New Evidence of Synergy Between Vitamins A and D: Protection Against Autoimmune Diseases

Some dosing considerations are discussed in the comments following the article, and you will note that (as expected) they mention much lower doses of vitamin D. However, remember that most people (at whom these comments are directed) do not have microscopic colitis.

At any rate, this might be worth a try, to boost the effectiveness of the vitamin D.

One way to increase the amount of vitamin A is to eat liver. I happened to like the stuff so I eat some every week. Liver is also full of B vitamins.

I am pretty certain my Vit D3 has been far more effective since I corrected the magnesium deficiency.

And of course, that the situation of after a period where my level halved in a 4 month period due to stress, that once I got the mag levels up, the Vit D3 level actually improved, even though I was not supplementing the Vit D3, albeit, thanks to the mag, my inflammation levels and reduced.
