Protein Powders

Post by jmh »

I'm in the process of finding foods besides the basic bland BRAT foods that I can eat. I know I need some protein, but sometimes I just can't stomach any meat that is on hand. My question is this:

Are there any protein powders available that are safe if:
I am still healing, but if on BRAT I have no issues
My only known food sensitivity at present is gluten

I appreciate your help and am so glad I've found this forum!!

Hi Judy-
I'm relatively new to this and not really sure about all the options available, but I know that there are many. I recently was perusing that section in my local Whole Foods market and found that most have artificial sweeteners, which are a BIG problem for me, along with many other ingredients that don't work for me. However, I also learned that you can try something from their store and if it doesn't work for you, you can bring it back for a refund! Since these powders can be pretty expensive, this was a HUGE benefit for me to learn. I bought some (gluten free, non GMO, no artificial sweeteners, etc.), but I haven't had the chance to try it yet because I like to only try new things when I have down time following in case I have a reaction, and I have had a lot going on right now. If you get other recommendations for specific protein powders from other people on the forum, and if you have a Whole Foods market near you, that might be a good option. A store worker who stopped to help me even helped look for things accommodating all my dietary restrictions.

Good luck!

Meg

Oh, and I also don't do well with meat. I recently received my EnteroLab results and they show high reactivity to beef, and moderate to pork and tuna.

The kind I bought is vegan and free of many potential irritants.

Thank you for that tip about Whole Foods, Meg. That would definitely make a difference when trying out their different products, and we do have a Whole Foods in my area. I also wondered about Trader Joe's, so I may check with them as well. Hopefully we'll get more replies and ideas on here as well. Let me know how you tolerate the one you bought when you have a chance to try it.

Judy
i use a GMO free, rice based protein that the only other ingredient is Stevia.
I purchase it online direct from the manufacturer here in Aus.

Depending on your intolerances, there are a variety of options that others have found, Rice Protein, Hemp Protein, Pea Protein.

Maybe do a bit of google searching, some manufacturers will send samples if you want to try before you buy.

If you do a 'search of the archives of this discussion board ' you will find recent previous discussions with brands etc

I just starting using a rice protein that I found in whole foods- NutriBiotic rice protein. The only ingredients are rice protein, sprouted brown rice, and natural vanilla flavor (they also have an unflavored one). It is gluten free and hasn't upset upset my stomach yet (although doesn't taste great)! I found the best way to disguise the taste is to put the powder into the batter of banana muffins.

I mix my protein powder with raw cocao, coconut sugar, and small amount of hot water to 'mix it all in' when cooled, add coconut water and rice milk.

Hi Judy,

I also use NutriBiotic rice protein. I like the plain variety. Each morning, I mix it in my blender with my homemade almond milk, a frozen banana, and some fruit of my choosing. I think it is delicious and filling enough to hold me all morning. Sometimes I mix it with almond milk, a banana, some cocoa powder, and honey to make a chocolate milkshake. I will also add it to my Rice Chex. At first it's a bit gritty, but I now prefer it that way. I order my rice protein online. Best wishes!

I'm sorry I haven't responded yet, I'm having a little trouble remembering which boards I've posted to and to look for responses! These are great suggestions. I'm going to look for some of these next time I'm in town at Whole Foods. Thanks so much!
