Whole Pills in My Poop
I am currently recovering from a flare and things are starting to get back to normal, until I introduce new foods. This tells me I'm better, but not healed.
I've started noticing whole pills in my poop :{ I'm pretty sure it's my metformin, and so I wonder if more of them are there and I'm just not seeing them.
I know I've seen somewhere on this site a comment about this, but for the life of me I can't find it. Can anyone tell me:
Is this a common occurrence?
At what point does it reverse?
Am I getting any benefit from those pills?
The metformin is for re-diabetes and I also take pills for bp, cholesterol (non-statin), and rls. I can't imagine stopping any of these, but if they're not giving me any benefit right now ....
Thanks!
Judy

Some medications are osmotic and the shells can still be seen in the stool. You can usually tell they are osmotic by looking at the tablet and noticing a small hole on the surface. They are almost always extended release medications. However, if they are not, you may have a problem. Metformin almost ALWAYS causes diarrhea in people who first start taking it, or increase in dose. This eventually goes away as your body begins to tolerate it. If you're seeing whole tablets in your stool, that means your body hasn't absorbed it at all.

That's exactly why I suggested in another thread that you would probably be much better off going back to the original version of metformin rather than to continue trying to use the timed-release version, at least until your motility is back to normal.
But remember that as long as you eat a low-carb diet, whether you absorb the metformin or not is a moot point, because as long as you keep your vitamin D level well up in the safe range, and eat a low carb diet, your A1C level will improve, and you will not develop diabetes. We have quite a few members here who follow that plan, and they have successfully avoided the development of diabetes by doing so (without taking any medications).

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
I was going to write something about the disappearance of food particles in my stool, but thought how to explain what I did to solve that. It's a new idea. I'll mention though as it easy to do. Likely it could help solve your problem.
Seeing undigested food particles has been a problem for me. Some foods are worse offenders than others. Nuts come to mind. After eating nuts I'd frequently see many come out undigested. Spinach was another undigested food.
Of late, after drinking some unique water, that has not been the case. I no longer see undigested particles anymore.
This is what helped me. In another post I recently brought up playing with something called EZ water in my diet. It's a water the could assist in the healing process. The water goes by other names. EZ is a term most often used recently as that is the name Professor Gerald Pollack used for the water when he wrote a best selling book last year called "The Fourth Phase of Water, Beyond Solid Liquid Vapor. "
When I looked further into the topic, the first major reference to the EZ water that I discovered was a product called CAD water. It goes by another name, Willard Water, as Dr. Willard created in the 1970s When I read about Willards water one of the positive health effects mentioned is that people that drink it find the issue of undigested particles in stools often disappearing. Additionally medication dosages will often need to be reduced.
I've tried Willards water. I still take some today from time to time. it worked as advertised. Particles in my stool went away quickly. Everything now appearances digested.
I posted this 60 Minutes news piece on Willards water awhile back. It was broadcast in 1980. After reading further about the circumstances on why the news piece was made, it happened shortly about the doctor ran into problems with the FDA. Dr. Willard wanted to have the water approved by the FDA. He was going through the testing process, but according to him found out that since he was an individual and not a large firm, the FDA was not willing to play ball. Congress held a hearing over what happened.
There isn't any mention of improved digestion, but the 60 minutes piece can be seen at:

With that said, it likely is not necessary to purchase Willards Water. It seems to be a fine product, but it is also easy to make EZ water.
Professor Pollack held a few interviews with Dr. Mercola. In the articles and video talks, several simple ways are mentioned on how to make EZ water. I've found references to these other ideas helping with improved digestion and a lowered need of medication dosages. The talks can be seen at:

&

Rather long write up for me! Good luck! Hope it helps improve the problem.

Thanks mzh! These water health ideas have certainly been a nice additional tool for improving my MC condition.
It's been fun to learn about many of waters unique characteristics also, learning theories on why the uniqueness occur. A few examples I recall, why does vortexing/stirring room temperature water cause it's temperature to drop, sometimes significantly? Why does warm water freeze quicker than cold water? Since I used to work for a gelatin manufacturing company, and was involved in a health study with gelatin it was a favorite to learn about, why does the water in jello desserts crystalize? Jello is around 95% water. We didn't know why that occurred back then, so was fun to learn why that likely happens. Anyway, I rather enjoy learning about this kind of stuff, so it's been very nice to feel better, and a good reading also about water.

Sure, EZs are easy to make. The two articles I posted above written by Dr. Mercola, and in them the interviews given of Professor Gerald Pollack, will give a far better explanation of where to find EZs. They are worth checking out. One of the unfortunate effects I've experienced from my MC condition is a poor ability to communicate.
In general though from what I've read, some ways to find and make EZs are:
- Drinking green smoothies.
- simply blending water. The oxygen incorporated into the water is thought to increase EZs. I guess with our modern city water, oxygen is removed as much as possible to avoid corrosion in the pipes. Blending water, increasing oxygen content by 30%, is more similar to whats found in natural stream water.
- eating jello.
- The practice of grounding/ earthing
- Vitamin C is thought to increase EZs in water. Citrus fruit added to a pitcher of water.
- Some minerals will increase EZs creation
- On the other side of the coin, some minerals will decrease EZs such as fluoride.
- Sunbathing/ infrared exposure
Personally drinking water blended for 10 minutes has helped improve my condition, I believe. Earthing has been helpful for aches and pains along with improved sleep. I've begun eating gelatin (made from fish) lately, but can't say whether it helps or not. I also purchase and drink a little Willards water each day. That was the first try I made with EZs. I noticed with that better digested waste.
Hope that helps!

Thanks for your suggestions on how to make EZ water, Adelie. I like being able to do this at home and will try it. I've gone back to the regular metformin for 6 days now and am still finding that I'm passing whole pills. I'll try this method before contemplating eliminating the pills all together. Judy
Hope one of the EZ making methods can assist with better digestion of the metformin pills. The simple vortex, oxygenated water had the greatest impact with stomach health for me. Adding 1/4 tbs of Willards water to a glass of water though was done first, and noticed after that food eaten was now appearing fully digested.
Ironically, some of the writers on EZ rich water, and with Earthing ,believe that EZs can reduce blood sugar./ prevent diabetes, the thirst disease It's just observations made. I don't believe any tests have been done on this. It's something to keep in mind if your blood sugar levels improve.
