Which magnesium?

Post by Hopeful »

Apologies. I know that Gabes and some others have posted about their favorite magnesium and potassium supplements but I'm having trouble finding that in the Archives.

I am using Mag spray and lotion but would also like to take (small amounts) of supplements. I find the mag spray VERY itchy!

Can you post the best, most absorbable kinds that you like?

Thanks! chris

I am currently taking 400 mg of magnesium citrate and 400 mg of magnesium glycinate. The citrate is much easier to absorb (for me, anyway), but it can cause D if the dose is too high, so I added the magnesium glycinate because the 400 mg of mag citrate wasn't quite doing the job. Magnesium glucinate will not cause D (at least not at any reasonable dosage rates).

I had previously tried 800 mg of magnesium glycinate, and it wasn't enough, so that/'s why I switched to 400 mg of magnesium citrate. But after a few months, foot and leg cramps were waking me again during the night, so that's why I recently added the 400 mg of mag glycinate.

However, I've been in remission for years. 400 mg of mag citrate might be too much for someone who hasn't done enough healing.

I'm not crazy about the oil, either, and I can't take mag citrate. However, I've been bathing in Epsom salts daily for a week, and I feel great. I don't know how much I'm getting, but it is not itchy, feels relaxing and no D so far.

I take 600mg of magnesium glycinate. Other forms cause D for me (at least they have in the past) and glycinate doesn't.

There is the Morton Epsom Salt Lotion which feels great, and is inexpensive. I get mine at Walmart next to the Epsom Salt. I put it on my legs right before I go to bed and no longer have leg cramps. It's also great to put on my hands after too much cross stitching. It works just like soaking in Epsom water.

there is lots of info about Magnesium, and as per the comments above, what works for one, may not work for another...
like alot of things in MC world, there is no set protocol that works!! you have to sort through the info and assess what you think will work best for you..

given your post about the motility/C type issue - using magnesium spray on your lower stomach, lower back will help the muscles in this area..
Taking magnesium orally will also help a more even motility. spread the dosage through the day to avoid causing D.

hope this helps

Thanks, Gabes. Good ideas. I invested in a "squatty potty" a few months ago and it does help. I will look into the exercise protocols, too.
I started putting mag lotion on my belly last month because I get a dry skin rash on it every winter (site of old stretch marks!). I'll try the lower back as well.

Has anyone tried Mag oil as a dental preparation? How about for the scalp?

I recently started to use magnesium gel on the bottom of my feet when I go to bed. It definitely helps me sleep better.

I've found using the spray in the arm pit has been the most tolerable place for me. Sometimes it does burn or get sticky but not often enough to be a problem. It's the one place that doesn't rub up against my clothing. I do it several times a day but don't know if that's enough. It has helped my leg cramping at night so it must be doing some good. I'm hesitant to try it orally at this point because I'm still too iffy on the healing.

Never thought of the bottom of my feet at bedtime. Good suggestion.
