Major gas pains
Oh my. Does anyone else have major gas pains? It begins right after I eat breakfast and progesses throughout the day. I am super sick of this. Not to mention a bit embarassing. LOL.
Something in your breakfast menu is causing you to react. Does breakfast include milk or yogurt, or citrus fruit, or a cereal that contains barley malt? Most mainstream breakfast cereals contain barley malt, and that's a source of gluten, so they're also a source of gas and bloating (usually followed by nausea, diarrhea, etc.).

Gas pains and cramping
I was just going to create a post on this, so this one is timely. Posting on behalf of my wife who was diagnosed with MC about a month ago. She continues to see incremental improvement, especially with D. She still has pretty regular episodes with gas and cramping following meals…not all, but some…at least now it isn't always ending up in a trip to the bathroom. Question is, is there something safe she can take before or after a meal to minimize the gas and cramping, without causing havoc?
If gluten and all dairy products are out of the diet, then sugar is probably the next common cause of gas and bloating. It was a problem for me, also.Leah wrote:For me, it's usually sugar or fruit ( fructose) that is the culprit
The reason is because the inflammation that causes MC also causes the small intestine to halt (or at least greatly diminish) its production of enzymes needed to digest the various carbohydrates/sugars. As the partially-digested carbs/sugars continue their journey through the digestive system, bacteria ferment them, causing gas and bloating (and often, diarrhea).

Sugar is a big culprit when it comes to gas. I gave up almost all grains and have had much less gas. Like Leah, I take a Gas-X equivalent when necessary. I am eating a modified Paleo diet and that seems to keep gas to a reasonable level.

From Tex....
"The reason is because the inflammation that causes MC also causes the small intestine to halt (or at least greatly diminish) its production of enzymes needed to digest the various carbohydrates/sugars. Does that mean that the gas is here to stay because of having MC, or will it ease in time?
I have continuously struggled with gas (some noises & bloating, too) for the last 8-10 months. It starts mid afternoon and goes through the night until morning. It is very bothersome!
I started an enzyme, but it hasn't totally resolved my issue.
I feel that my MC is under control, but I don't know if the gas is related to food (raw vs. cooked veggies, still??....or what?)) or my small intestine, gall bladder, pancreas, liver, etc....just can't get to the root of it.
I don't eat any grains, and no sugar...only a few blueberries & a little banana daily (cooked). I eat a little coconut flour and flax but that's minimal as far as fiber goes....
Anyone with a thought to share because my thinker is all out of them! Thanks!

Mmmm gabe pondering out loud, if we balance the bacteria will that correct the issue?
12 months ago gas was huge issue for me, and embarrassing as it was putrid smelling.
I am thinking the high doses of Vit C have helped.
I just wrote about TMG Betaine for Theresa's methylation results, and was interested that it destroys detrimental bacteria in the stomach and small intestine....
Do you have your 23andme results yet... Dying to see your methylation cycle report...
I think we may find some of the answers there.

Thanks for the quick response, my friend, Gabes!
The gas doesn't smell...whatever that means...
I do take betaine, but have cut it down to 300-400 units per meal. I take a probiotic now, too...about 12 billion right now.
I sent my 23 & me in on the 5th of January....so I'm still waiting...will I get an email or do I have to keep checking the sites?

They will send email, first up you will get some basic ancestory data, sort of like an entree!!, then 24-48 hours later you will get full results. I got mine about 2 weeks from when they 'receipted' the sample.
So I am guessing about 24-26 January.
Mmmm I am taking 2000 mg of Betaine per day. Ideally I want to take 3000. Mine is the TMG, Betaine anyhydrous variant Which is different to the Betaine hcl.

Not sure.... It came up as a priority requirement when I did a hair analysis test in October (cost me $30)
Since then doing the 23andme, then methylation report, and subsequent research, the results of the hair analysis make sense, it was all linked to issues with methylation cycle.
The now foods, TMG, from iHerb was cheapest option so I got it...

Looking at 'nutrient bible' text book.
You need 500-650mg per large meal.
My thoughts are, If deficient, or using more because of dodgy methylation cycle, or if there is large amount of dodgy bacteria, you would need more.
Nutrient bible says you can have up to 2500mg per day.
Maybe a higher Betaine with probiotic will fix bacteria imbalance. Keep in mind that if clearing bad bacteria you will poop more..
