I Survived!

Post by Polly »

Hooray! It's oooooover!

All was fine. I was cleaned out enough (whew). Had one teeny rectal polyp which was removed. Biopsy report will take at least a week, but all looked well grossly (d'uh, the hallmark of MC).

It just amazes me the care they take for this routine procedure. I had a cardiac monitor, automatic blood pressure cuff, pulse oximeter on the finger to measure oxygen saturation, oxygen running thru a nasal catheter, and an IV. Not to mention 4 medical professionals in the room the entire time - anesthesiologist, GI doc, RN, and technician. It definitely inspires confidence. Plus they paid attention to creature comforts. While I was waiting to go into the procedure room, the nurses kept piling fresh, heated blankets over me and saying things to relax me and make me laugh. Afterward, they brought coffee, tea, soda, whatever you wish, and even walk you all the way back to your car. Of course, no driving allowed all day - they require someone to be there to drive you home. Came home and crashed for 3 hours!

They are using a new IV anesthetic now - supposedly it works faster, takes you deeper, and has a quicker recovery time.

Well, off to grab some dinner. Thanks again for your support! It helped.

Love,

Polly

Polly,

Glad to hear everything went well, including the cleanout. You didn't complain enough about that!

Looking forward to the biopsy report.

Love, Jean

Hi Polly. Hooray! That is truly wonderful news!

I am very impressed with your hospital (and I am not easily impressed). I thought my hospital was pretty good but yours is unbelievable. If you don't mind my asking, which hospital was it?

Enjoy your evening along with lots of your favorite foods!

Love,
Carrie

Polly,

Great! Sounds as though a good time was had by all. I'm glad that everything went so well.

I feel cheated. When I had my exam, there were only three present--the GI, a nurse, and yours truly. I'll bet that in your case, they just didn't want to take a chance on losing a doctor, in case something went wrong. Besides, it would look bad. LOL. Just Kidding.

I hope you enjoy that big dinner tonight. After my exam, I couldn't get rid of the dang gas they pumped into me, so I was nauseaus, and couldn't eat much, for a day or so afterwards, until I finally got rid of the gas. In fact, I vomited in the recovery room, instead of doing what I was supposed to be doing in there. Sigh.

You should be good for at least another five years, now.

Love,
Wayne

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

That's great Polly, now you can relax. It is good to have it over & done with. Good also to get rid of any polyps however small they may be. Hope your biopsy report is what you dream of. Sounds as though they really looked after you.

Love

Liz

Ph.G.,
What a relief, eh? Did you sleep like a log afterwards? Well now THATS out of the way for another 5 - 10 years.

Gooooooooooooooood news!
I know you feel better now - isn't it wonderful to get something to eat again? Here is to your continued recovery. Cheers.

I'll bet you are glad *that's* over!! Sounds like everything went well and I'll be curious to see the biopsy results!

BTW, if your pulse oximeter was made by Tyco/Nellcor, chances are my hubby helped design it

Thanks, everyone!

Carrie, the hospital is the Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC). As I walked into their Kroh GI Pavilion yesterday, I noticed a sign that said that GBMC is recognized by U.S. News and World Report for having two top services - cancer and digestive. The lady in the cubicle next to me had come from central PA for her colonoscopy.

I love my GI doc. She looks like Sarah Jessica Parker and is very upbeat.
She was telling everyone about how impressed she was that I had found out on my own how to manage MC using dietary methods. And the best news is that she now recommends this to her patients! Imagine! She is beautiful, smart, AND has an open mind!!!

CA Mary, I don't know the brand of the pulse ox, but that's impressive that your hubby helped to design one. It's an extremely important tool, even lifesaving at times!

Melissa, definitely like a LOG. I don't think I moved a muscle for 3 hours!

Wayne, I wasn't getting any special treatment, LOL! Really, it is an exemplary service for everyone. They even ask if it's OK to call you the next day to see how you are feeling. They have thought of everything.

Liz, good luck......sounds like you are next in line for a colonoscopy. Do they have anything better in Australia for the cleanout? The choices here suck. In fact, the nurse and I decided yesterday that the way to make our million bucks would be to design an acceptable cleanout procedure.

I almost feel giddy today, now that that's over and the cold is almost gone. YIPPEE!

Love,

Polly

Hi Polly,

I am so glad that everything went so well and if and when I have my next one I just might make the journey to your part of the world. The hospital sounds grand. My first and only one they rushed me out after recovery like it was the only bed in the place.

Rest well and enjoy this weekend, Maggie

Hi Polly,

I'm glad that's over with for you. Can you answer a question for me? Why is the dosage the same (for that clean out stuff) no matter what the patient's size?

Sounds like you got exellent care! One of the reasons I will never go back to the doctor that did mine here in Toronto, I had told him that I was always put to sleep because of the adhesions on my bowels. Not only did he not listen, but he laughed when I told him I was in pain for 3 days afterwards. And what he called, "mild discomfort", was actually me screaming from the pain, but of course I couldn't move, and I didn't know that no sound was coming out of my mouth. An awful feeling. They did not have anyone check on me after, and basically I was alone for over an hour waiting for my daughter to come and pick me up.
Sometimes I have to wonder about some of the care given here, although we pay little for health care, we also don't get the feeling of being cared for.

Mind you, when I lived up in Northern Ontario, I had much better care, before and after, maybe its because of being in the city. I don't know.

What I do know is, its great when its done! And you should be very proud of yourself too, you did accomplish allot, and it has done you so much good.for your body and health.

Gentle hugs
Wendy

Wendy, I remember your horror story......and it still gives me chills. Totally inexcusable!

Marsha, you just pushed one of my buttons. In Pediatrics we calculate the dose of medicine based upon the patient's actual weight that day. And, as you know, even OTC preparations for kiddies have different doses based upon the age/weight of the kid - infant, toddler, etc.

I have never understood why the same dose is applied to all adults, whether it be a 250 pound man or a 100 pound woman. I suspect that many women experience problems from too much medication. How many women do you know who say that they are very sensitive to medications and often do fine with much less than is prescribed? I have had 2 colonoscopies now, and in both cases, I was completely cleaned out after drinking only between 1/3 and 1/2 half of the Go-lytely. I suspect this is the reason so many women get deathly ill from the Fleet's Phospho soda option - it's simply too much for a smaller person!

OK, I'll step down from my soapbox now. LOL!

Love,

Polly
