I have a chef card that I used when eating out...
1. it is the best way to get instructions to the chef, rather than rely on the waitress to relay the instructions
2. rather than listing all the things you 'CANT' eat. put some wording as to what you can eat and how they can prepare it.
other suggestions:
- find a restaurant/cafe that has fairly plain type meals.
- go at a quieter time when there are less patrons/orders going through the kitchen
- ring ahead or go and see them mid afternoon and see what options are available. if they are unable to provide a full meal to your specifications, ask can you bring some components (ie well cooked safe veges) and they cook you some chicken or some fish or other protein
here is the wording of my chef card
I suffer from two diseases (celiac and microscopic colitis) causing serious multiple intolerances. I am unable to tolerate any gluten or soy and have reactions to many ingredients (too many to list)
Can I ask that you cook the meal with minimal amount of butter or rice bran oil and that any vegetables with the meal are well cooked. Salt is my only 'safe' flavour enhancer. Nut oils such as cold pressed macadania oil are ok
Please do not use any vegetable oils or olive oils or other flavour enhancers such as pepper, herbs, garlic, balsamic vinegar.
Adjust the wording to suit your circumstance. As i react worse to soy than anything else, I give them the option of using small amount of butter for cooking. keep in mind that most restaurants/cafes bulk buy things like vegetable oil, soy based. they may not have many other alternatives most restaurants/cafe have pure butter. Try to pick something form the menu that is plain (not pre marinated or majorily pre-prepared) that the chef can easily cook plainly to meet the specs.

Hi Sandy,
Welcome! I have good luck with the GF menu from Outback in Florida. I've eaten at Outback in FL many many times and have never had a problem. I've done okay at Red Robin. Bad experiences at Sonnys Barbeque. I avoid Applebees. It is too processed and everything has gluten or soy in it. I've had very bad experiences at pizzeria type places (I ordered salad or GF burger.) I refuse to go to pizzeria type places as they are rife with gluten contamination with flour flying around. Chiles makes a homemade guacamole dip in front of you. The boyfriend will order a meal, I'll order the dip and bring my own GF crackers and eat that.
When I travel outside of FL I generally get broiled fish or steak with no butter on it. I have baked sweet potato or white potato with no butter (I bring my own ghee or olive oil to put on it.) I have broccoli with no butter on it. This is my go to meal to order when traveling on business. If you get a steak make sure to mention no butter on top.
If you have a safe meal at a restaurant tip well and always ask for the same server. It helps if you can get to know some of the cooks/chefs. My fishmonger from the farmers market cooks at various restaurants. I go to the restaurants that he works for it, ask for him, he comes to the table and makes me a special meal.
My goal is to host more events at my house, even pot luck this year. I'm hosting the superbowl party.
If it is a risky social situation I will eat a full meal at my house and get decaf coffee or iced tea or white wine when out.
My boyfriend is supportive but he saw me really really sick for two years and so weak I could not walk around Publix (at age 50). Mom has had celiac for about 30 years. To this day I don't believe my Dad understands the seriousness of the diagnosis.

Didnt work for me either - sorry about that
lets try again
and i cant find it again!!
it was along the lines that excitotoxins issues, inflammation and issues in the methylation cycle can cause high blood calcium. I am still in the early stages of learning about the methylation cycle and its complexities....
in trying to find it, i came across some other stuff

http://www.gordonresearch.com/inner.cfm ... &priorId=0During this phase it is also important to stop the inflammatory process created by the excitotoxin triggers. Excess excitotoxins cause an imbalance in the flow of calcium, which leads to activation of a complex inflammatory cascade, release of inflammatory mediators and ultimately causes the death of neurons. Halting this inflammatory cascade is achieved with a number of supplements known to mitigate inflammatory mediators.
http://peelingbacktheonionlayers.com/ex ... s-do-harm/Excitotoxins like glutamate cause problems because they allow high levels of calcium into the cell, essentially exciting the cell to death. This is why it is said that “glutamate is the gun, and calcium is the bullet”.

Eating Out
Hi- we went to olive garden yesterday evening. They had a gf menu at the hostess stand. Did fine so far withnthe steak and gf pasta. But waitress just looked at my chefs card. My food came with a tomato garnish, which I couldn't eat. No baked potato or sweet potato on menu. Got out voted on trying the outback restaurant. Sandy also made sure husband tipped well!

Eating out is a tough mission in the early days of sorting out your eating plan....
As time goes on, you will come up with a way that you can make it work .....
Keep expectations of choices /tasty meal fairly low for a while.
