Sushi and gluten and bad moon rising!

Post by Greengoddess »

Having gone to great effort to remove gluten from my diet and recovering somewhat, I ate some sushi three days ago. Despite all care I had one of the worst flares ever. Not just the gut but an outbreak of psoriasis that l had never seen before. Also heartburn which is the worst symptom for me. It seems that the longer one stays without gluten the worse the attack! Something must have been in sushi particularly bad.
I feel its like Snakes and Ladders with MC. Hard to keep mood in positive territory.

Soy sauce has gluten in it. Did you dip your sushi in soy? Sorry you're not feeling well. Hope you can track it down.

I am allergic to rice so I just eat the fish as sashimi but I usually just stay away from Japanese food.

Turns out that I have the beginnings of a respiratory infection. I actually think the virus has triggered something in itself. I am wheezing slightly and have dug out my rarely-used inhaler. The psoriasis is calming down but the acid stuff and cystitis is annoying me. Most medics will deny that those have anything to do with MC which is also annoying!

Hi Greengoddess,

Of course they will deny it...

When I was really really sick, I had this burning and pressuring feeling in my bladder, and I always had the feeling that I would have to go to the toilet. When I got there, I would have 2-3 drops of urine.

I had a CT - where I could see my own bladder on a monitor - and everything was fine.

After having gone gluten- and dairy free it took almost one year before my bladder problems disappeared. Now I feel quite "normal". As I have mentioned earlier, my psoriasis also disappeared, but quicker than the bladder issues.

I hope this will happen to you, as well.
PS: Read carefully what your inhaler consists of. Maybe you are better off, just enduring the virus with no "help".

Best wishes,

I occasionally go to a Japanese restaurant for sushi, the waitress has celiac so she is a wonderful resource to keep me safe. She says fish eggs have soy in them, if you order a California roll the phony crab has gluten in it. Various sauces have gluten in them. I've been using Coconut Aminos (thank you, Polly) and it works well for the dipping sauce with the wasabi. Hope you figure it out.

This is interesting about the coconut aminos as a substitute for soy sauce. Just looked on Amazon and the Coconut Secret Organic Raw Coconut Aminos Soy-Free Seasoning Sauce has just 2 ingredients - coconut sap and salt. That means that it must be a fermented product (same way soy sauce is made). I have been avoiding fermented products because of the histamine issue as well as the unknown probiotic content.
Anyone have a comment on this? Sure would be nice to enjoy "soy" sauce again!

I have no problem with coconut aminos but seem to have less histamine problems then some on this board.

I tried the coconut aminos but they caused D for me. I haven't been tempted to try them again. Many here on the forum seem to like them so I guess all you can do is try them for yourself and see how you react. Wouldn't it be nice if there was always a definitive answer rather than try it and see?
