Well if you read my other post you will know that Mel failed a class, and getting school funding was based on her passing all her courses, mainly because last year when she was in Health and Fitness she did very poorly in the last semester, so did not graduate. She changed back to what she was good in, fashion and design for this year. But she would only getting funding if she passed all classes. But just to let you know, last year they only gave her 1500 hundred for the whole year, her tuition was close to 3 thousand and her books were well over a thousand, so she had to work allot more to be able to live, let alone pay for school. So that of course takes time aways from studying too. But that didn't matter. My thing with Mel is thatfor along time I have thought that she was learning disabled. Great at some things, and others no comprehension what so ever. I wanted her to go for testing a long time ago, but I'm just the mother, and she has always had to try it first her way, then when that didn't work, she would be ready to try it my way. So with her failing in that one class, after working her butt off. she was ready to listen. Anyone who knows her, knows she has such a hard time to spell things, and there are allot of other things that she keeps mixing up. So I told her she needed to go and talk with the department at the College that checks to see if you are LD. Low and behold, after interviewing Mel for several hours the woman sho does this in her job allthe time, went out on a limb and said that in her expert opinion she was LD. But the testing costs over 2 thousand dollars. With not getting OSAP, she doesn't exactly have any money to throw around. So she went further out on a limb for her and got the OSAP department to reinstate Mels student funding, which they did by putting her down as already LD, and then they could do the testing and it would be paid from that department. Whew, so for the next couple of weeks Mel will under go some tests, and then we will know for sure. I always said that Mel had an excellent memory and that is why she always did excellent in school, but that it missed the real problmes that she had. And it did, she graduated with honours, won a bursury, and several other toop honours for her work in diffirent subjects;. She has not one C right through grade school to, all A's and B's, but mostly A's. And she had a great relationship with all her teachers. They were also aware of her circumstances at home, that at the time I was bedridden and she took on much more then usual for a teenager. So if she needed more time, it was no problem. But in College, well, you had better be able to work fast and keep up. Well she worked some nights at the gym at the College and many nights she wouldn't even go home, but sleep in her office at the College. And while there, she could work on any assignments on the Computer. What she left out is that to do her assignments she had to use a dictionary to do any of it. She spent double or triple the time doing any assignment because of that. By the end of the year, even that was not helping so she was just discoraged with herself. She didn't give up though, and that is where I have to be proud of her. She worke hard all summer, 12 hour days, 6 days a week. But when she finally talked to this woman, and she knew what she was talking about, Mel felt this big weight come off her shoulders. And that is why they went out on a limb to reinstate her funding. And why they think she should have the testing done. What that means is that they will teach her how to learn and compensate for her weak areas, and give funding for whatever she needs in order to complete her courses. Now she is fretting because these two women went out on a limb to help her get the funding and she panics because WHAT if she is not LD??? She is worried about them sticking their necks out for her. What a sweetheart. But I assured her that these women do this everyday, and they know the signs and things to look for. They know. So maybe she won't have the struggles she has right now, and she will get the help she needs.
ALl of which I am happy about.
Now it is bedtime......................
Gentle hugs

That is great news, Wendy. It is definitely in the college's best interest to keep Mel as a student, and in society's best interest to have her graduate. She is the hard working, dedicated woman we need to make the world a better place! You are justifiably proud of her! Heck, I'm proud of her and I don't even know her!
