Empty Belly
Sorry for the 100 questions but do people find this. Everytime I eat something besides oats it goes in one end and out the other literally with 10 min or so depending on what it is. I feel full until I empty then I am starving again so I eat. I am not an overweight person but am worries I could be if this continues. Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks
Karen

There is no 'MC diet' per say - as we are all slightly different
(this is part of the sucky part of MC)
as you read through the posts you will see what others have done.
gluten free is one step
many have to avoid Dairy (caesin is more of an issue than lactose)
many have to avoid Soy
many have to avoid Eggs
Keep in mind, that probably 70% or more of the people here tested negative to celiac via blood test /colonscopy but do way way better avoiding gluten...
In my case, Soy is a worse trigger than gluten (go figure)
I am ok with Eggs, but can not do yeast or nitrates (cured meats, commercial stock etc)
Avoid chemical sugars, minimise sugar intake, no preservatives or colourings
my eating plan since Dx has been well cooked, bland, gut healing meals.
stews and soups based on home made bone broth (home made bone broth is best thing you can do!)
well cooked veges with salmon
as I can handle Rice ok, I have a rice protein powder
minimise herbs and spices for now. Avoid high fibre ie raw fruit, salad (tough to do in aussie summer i know!)
down the track once good healing has occurred you will be able to include some salad items
we are very lucky in Aus as there are some fantastic products available...
Orgran products are trustworthy, these are stocked in Coles and most good health food/organic shops (wray organic at newmarket is good source of items for multiple intolerances)
http://www.zehnder.com.au/ - these are fantastic. I think the IGA at McDowell has them...
IGA McDowell also have a great gluten free section....
apart from that it is 'meat and 3 veg' type meals....

check the ingredients of the GF weetbix.
I never did so well with cereals, even the GF and SF ones.
we are all different.....
frequently for breaky I have bubble and squeak (left over veges) warmed up with poached eggs or salmon
or some of my stew with the zehnder bread toasted makes a good breaky
I used to do cook ups on the weekend and freeze meals etc. made it so much easier for work etc. IF i had bigger meals for breakfast and lunch, having a lighter dinner helped me to sleep better.

Man, you Aussies are so lucky to be in summer right now - we are having a terrible time in the northern climes! The average temperature in central NY state this month has been 10F - or about minus 12 celsius. That's the AVERAGE temperature!
Anyways, welcome to our new member. I am pretty new, too. After 5 months on a pretty strict diet, I feel so much better and have tapered off almost all of my medicines. No cramps, no diarrhea.
This is what I did:
Eat sweet potatoes, winter or summer squash, green beans, carrots - all peeled and well cooked.
Eat meat: turkey works better than chicken for some, lamb, venison, pork, beef (try the last 2 with caution).
Eat peeled potatoes a little at a time and see how that goes. But no tomatoes, peppers, eggplant.
Eat rice, well boiled and see how that goes. If all is well, you can try adding rice cakes, crackers, rice pasta.
Flavor foods with coconut or olive oil instead of butter. Salt, pepper.
Avoid onions, garlic, spices for a while.
Read ingredients, don't even think about "gluten-free" processed food right now - too many questionable ingredients.
When you're hungry, reach for meat first. We need it.
Try some salmon or other mild fish, cooked plain.
Chew thoroughly and slowly and appreciate every bite.
Learn to think of your old "favorites" like bread and sweets as poison to your system.
Stop and smell the flowers. You have flowers, right? It will be months before we see any...
Ask all of your questions as they come up. There are so many people here who have been through this.
You will experience grief for your former care-free life. You may rage against the disease here - we will listen.
But then you will experience joy when you take control of the "new normal" and make a new life for yourself.
Hoping you all are having a wonderful summer. We'll be seeing the first signs of spring here soon, if we're lucky.
We're READY!!
Chris

Chris..
In Aus not many towns get heavy snow like you guys get in North America!
be assured that in the middle of humid storm ridden summer we dream of snow!! (and tropical cyclones like the one that happened last week)
I am 45 and never seen real snow!
the tough part about being in Aus with MC is a big part of the eating culture, summer and winter is salad and fruits. It is quite tough to socialise and stick to your MC eating plan without coping an 'interrogation' about why you cant eat salad.

Hi Gabes
Do you know if cantaloupe, honeydew or watermelon are an issue? I can't seem to tell if I have issues or not eating them.
I have been staying away from salads as well, but try some melons from time to time when in season, I don't go overboard with them either. So perhaps that is why I don't know if I am affected by them.
Recently I tried to make an almond milk smoothie with pureed banana and strawberry/blueberries adding it to some oatmeal and that was a huge disaster....live an learn. Tasted so good though....was so bummed.
Thanks :-)

Erica,
I couldn't handle any melons when I was recovering. The high sugar content is probably a major part of the problem (most of us can't digest significant quantities of many types of sugar when our MC is active, and that causes it to ferment in our colon, causing gas, bloating, and diarrhea). But the high fiber content is also a problem for many of us. But we're all different, and I'm sure that some members can probably tolerate melons, especially if they don't overdo it.
Try that smoothie recipe without the oatmeal and it will probably work OK. Oats are not only loaded with fiber, but most of us here also react to the avenin in oats (avenin in oats is the biological equivalent of gluten in wheat).
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Thanks for the reply Tex,
I will give just the fruit and almond milk a try again.
Btw my husband is very happy that I have found a forum where I can ask questions and get some support along the way. I think he has been concerned about me ever since Perimenopause hit when I was 40 and I didn't know what was going on with myself.
I've started back up on my allegra to get some relief until I sort out my food and stress decisions.
I tried Bentyl at one point but it gave me awful side effects and the headaches were not worth the small increments of time that my colon didn't contract as often.
Thanks again

I am over 5 years post Dx, and still struggle with any fruits.... I can do small amounts of berries, cooked or processed to pulp, once a week or so. And have small amount of peeled Apple.
As Tex mentions I think it is a combo of the sugar and fibre.
As you will soon see, in MC world, we are all very different. What works for one, may not work for another. Keep a food/activity/symptom diary... Listen to your body and figure out what works best for you....
This forum, with caring, knowledgeable supportive people, willing to answer questions has helped many many people....
I wish we could provide the magic quick fix that would resolve mc issues, the sad reality is that it takes lots of time, experiments/learnings to figure out each individual's best management plan....
