More immodium questions....

Post by Vanessa »

I've been taking Immodium multi system relief 1/2 pill to 1 pill in the morning on empty stomach as a maintenance dose. Has been helping tremendously. I have been on it for a little over a month. Recently, in the last week, I have been having extreme fatigue and dizziness more towards the evening and sometimes in the daytime. Just wondered if anyone else had this side effect. I know it is listed on the side effects but am confused as to why its happening now. I didn't think it built up in the system like some other meds. The only other thing that has changed is I am eating a small amount of dulse flakes 3 times a week ( starting a week ago) to get some iodine since I don't get any in my diet. I can't imagine that would cause anything......maybe its a virus.....I can only hope it is. That would mean my gut is healing! Has anyone had dizziness and fatigue as a food allergy side effect?

Hi Vanessa,

This is apparently uncommon, but I also experienced dizziness after taking Imodium. Half a tablet would cause just enough dizziness to be noticeable, and a whole tablet would make me dizzy enough that I had to be careful when moving around because of the balance issue. I don't remember how long I used them (every day at a low dose) but I believe that it was less than 2 weeks when the dizziness began to show up, and it seemed to get worse each time, so I stopped using them. It took me a few days to figure out what was causing the problem, but fortunately my dizziness showed up within an hour or so after taking it, so whenever I took a whole tablet it became pretty obvious that they were the problem.

I don't remember noticing fatigue, but this happened when I was recovering from my last surgery, which left me with an ileostomy and a long incision on my belly to heal. I was unable to work for about 6 weeks, so I was just taking it easy and healing. And a day or so after the stitches were removed, part of the incision popped open when I bent over to pick up something off the floor one day, so I had to take it even easier after that. Anyway, that may be why I didn't notice any fatigue, because I wasn't actually doing anything but surviving. And they may not cause the same side effects for everyone who experiences side effects from them.

I don't recall anyone else here having that problem, but maybe my memory is getting rusty.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I get that, dizziness and fatigue, and am going through that right now. The diet I'm on is working well. I'm producing normans, and my appearance is healthier. I'm pleased. I can become fatigued and dizzy easily though. I've personally attributed the problem to a tender spot in the gut being rubbed wrong, causing a slightly elevated heart rate. That's just a guess for my situation. I've noticed ironically in the past, since I commented on a fiber article yesterday, that eating too much fiber can cause a similar fatigue and dizziness problem for me. Exercise, where the mid section is moved around a good amount, can bring about similar symptoms also. Eating nuts can sometimes be troubling in this regard too.

I take kelp rich in iodine and have tried stopping it in the past to see if it effected this problem. I didn't notice a difference. I used to take imodium regularly, but haven't needed it in awhile.

To mention also, while of late I've experienced poor energy and dizziness at times, I've also recently had time where I were was on the opposite end of the spectrum, with very high energy and no dizziness. As best as I can tell, for me, it's related to how the gut is being rubbed or not.

Thanks guys

Tex, I can't imagine the recovery from a surgery like that. I bet you got a lot of reading done!

Blueberry, I too have had this extreme energy bout where I've thought to myself someone has slipped me something illegal. I can get tons of stuff done and then boom! The next day I'm so tired and fatigued....can't drive for fear of crashing. Weird. It happened this way this week. I guess it could be hormones once again. I seem to blame everything in the world on that. I don't want to stop the immodium because it's helping and I recall having these bouts before I started it. It is truly miserable to be so tired you can barely survive let alone work 12 hour days at a hospital
