What if depression isn’t caused by a “chemical imbalance” after all? More specifically, what if depression itself is not a disease, but a symptom of an underlying problem?
That is exactly what the most recent research on depression is telling us. A new theory called the “Immune Cytokine Model of Depression” holds that depression is not a disease itself, but instead a “multifaceted sign of chronic immune system activation.” (3)
To put it plainly: depression may be a symptom of chronic inflammation.

Thanks Deb,
To be honest, I have been under the impression for a long time that depression was a symptom of inflammation. It's known to be associated with untreated celiac disease, and our own experience shows that it holds true for MC. The only times that I can ever recall feeling depressed was when I was reacting/inflamed.
Thanks for the link.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Of course, MC (inflammation) causes depression.
The inflammation depletes our first line defence, and while the body is busy fighting the physical deficiencies, there is not enough surplus to take care of the phycological aspect.
I was never depressed prior to my CC diagnosis.

Deb,
there are quite a few Doctors/Scientists that have published articles and made presentations on this subject.
Albeit, (and sadly) with the money made by Big Pharma with the sales of Anti- Depressants, the inflammation/depression situation is going to be a slow journey into main stream medicine...
This Chicago based Chiro has been presenting on this subject since 2012.
