a great experience

Got all my laundry done....had dinner and 2 movies with SIL and BIL. Listened to my new 1.99 cd I bought at salvation army called "Traditional Hymns" by the Great Plains Chorale" I am trying to learn a couples hymns. Blessed Assurance and Blessed Redeemer. But the best part of the weekend was yesterday when I went into town to get supplies...I had made the turn from County roads to Highway and was on the highway for approx 2 mi when I spotted 2 deer along side the road...I slowed to a stop and watched as 10 more deer lept the fence as if it was in slow motion all in a string...they crossed the road and lept that fence all 12 in a row once more as if it was slow motion...the whole time I was listening to Amazing grace on a cd in the truck. Hi Oma,

It really is inspirational to watch wildlife such as those deer, isn't it. They show more gracefullness than we can ever hope to achieve.

You are correct. Remember the Movie "Starman" . Where Starman (Can't remember stars name) brings back to life a deer that had been shot? Scarey Love Oma

Hi Oma. Nature is a wonderful thing isn't it? A few years ago i was out west, driving early in the morning, being very wary of kangaroos at that time of the day, & we could see something on the road a way in front. As we got closer we could see that it was a huge eagle,must have had a 6 foot wingspan at least. He was just standing in the middle of the road looking at us as if to say "I will move in a minute when I am ready". Although we had a couple of cameras & a video on board we were too transfixed to take a photo. He was beautiful. After a minute or so he gave us another disdainful look & flew away.

How wonderful to see an Eagle like that. I guess you have the same problem there with Kangaroo's as we have here in Texas with the deer population. I love nature. I gave up hunting years ago when I no longer had to feed my kids from what I hunted. Love Oma

Kangaroos were in plague proportions last time I was out west in 2001. Everywhere we went we were warned to be careful of the "Grass Hoppers",especially early morning & dusk when they would come closer to the road looking for a feed. The emus & wild pigs were a bit of a problem as well. Emus are pretty stupid birds. You think they are looking somewhere else & they run out right towards. So you have to be very careful driving in those areas. We have kangaroos & wallabies around here too But not as many as there used to be.

We have some wild pigs around here that grow in numbers every season. They always have small babies. There's no seaon on them here...just have to have a license. But they are neat to watch. One year when I lived in Utah probably around 82' , it was such a bad winter with alot of snow. It drove the deer down (Wasatch front, Mountains) from the wasatch mountains and caused them to eat everyones bushes and evergreens, hay, whatever they could get hold of. Everyone started putting fruit in the orchard branches and corn on the ground around all the plants. That year I even saw deer in the bank drive thru teller. Love Oma

Oma,

About a year and a half ago, the Texas legislature passed a law allowing the hunting of wild hogs without a license. They can be legally hunted by any landowner on his/her own property, or by any "agent" of the landowner, meaning anyone with permission from the landowner. They are the only animals that can be legally hunted in Texas withoug a license.

The exception was made because of the excessive populations, and the damage they cause to habitat, crops, fences, watersheds, etc., in many areas.

Here is a picture I took of your Texas peccaries in a state park. They were also in the campgrounds. Do they taste like bacon?

When we were in Australia we saw a wedge talied eagle on the side of the road, standing watch beside its dead mate. He/she had probably been hit by a car--a less careful driver than you, Liz. There are no vultures in Australia so the eagle and also a black kite (if I remember correctly) take care of the carrion.

Crows do that job also Hazel.

We had wild pigs around here when we first came here in the 1970's. They used to dig up our sweet potatoes & anything else we planted. Haven't seen them around for ages. Probably too populated now. people hunt them with pig dogs & are allowed to shoot them in certain areas.

Hi Hazel,

No, they don't taste like bacon. They're not in the swine family. They have a very weak, almost neutral flavor. Actually, they taste sorta like, (you guessed it), chicken. LOL. They really do, at least that's my opinion.

Wayne...it depends on what you smoke them in or BBQ. We use...yep you guessed it...mesqite. But they do taste somewhat like chicken to me. Love Oma

And of course smoked just about anything is yummy. Who are they related to if not swine? Deer?
