new symptoms?
Hi, all. I have been incommunicado for the last week because of traveling. Eating away from home is always so challenging!
Anyways, for the last 6 weeks, I have considered myself to be close to remission with normal poops, very little gas or bloating. Tapered down to only one Entecort/week. Feeling a little cocky, even. But my poops for the last 3 weeks remind me of when I was a child. Rather hard little bullets with the feeling that I need to go a couple of times a day but hard to push out. Hemorrhoids quite irritated. There's also some stringy mucus, sometimes tinged pink (blood?). So...
I know that Tex talks about how sometimes when we eliminate our major trigger foods, the lesser devils come to the fore. I am still very strict, but do you all think I should do further eliminations such as almond butter/almond milk? I have not changed any of the supplements that I've taken for the last 3 months and can't think of any other differences in my diet.
I would really like to be done with the Entecort completely so that I can get tested by enterolabs, but I'm thinking that I may still need it until I heal some more.
What are your thoughts? Thanks! Chris

Hi Chris,
Sorry to hear of the new symptoms, but please don't take Entocort. That would surely make the problem worse. Maybe you just don't have enough fiber in your diet. Some of us need fiber in order to do the final diet tuning, because what we eat definitely determines the texture and composition of our stools. And traveling adds it's own complications to our diet.
At least those are my initial thoughts, for what they're worth.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I think I will increase my magnesium from 300 mg to more, which might help. I'll increase my veggies, slightly under-cook them, and leave the skins on my potatoes. I'll try some brown, instead of white, rice.
Maybe sneak in some fruits.
I'm really afraid of psyllium, ground flax seed and other added fiber. What do you all think?
I know that I'm getting plenty of fats - animal, coconut, and olive.
Also plenty of water (2.5 liters/day).
Any other thoughts??

Of the 3 items you mentioned (psyllium, ground flax seed, and other added fiber), IMO ground flax seed is by far the more potent laxative, and I would be very cautious with it.

at this stage the increase of magnesium and gradual increase of gentle fibre is the best way to go.
Magnesium wise, if you can get up to 600mg of elemental magnesium it will help alot
Peeled apple eaten slowly works well for me..
(the pectin in the apple also helps if there is any inflammation)
Gentle fruit, slight increase in texture of safe veges is a better option than the other items....
take it slow with introducing the 'gentle' fibre, wait 24-30 hours to let it work before increasing the amount or adding something else...
same with the magnesium, increase it gradually to ensure you dont cause D issues...
increase by 50mg per day, for three or four days, then increase by 50mg or so again, stay on 400mg for a few days and if no D issues, keep gradually increasing..
the other thing - Constipation is also an indicator of inflammation - maybe increase the Vit D3 a little bit...
