My son's 20 year old girlfriend with symptoms

Post by Greengoddess »

I had them staying with me and ( after a request for a nail file) noticed she had nails flaking all around the edges like mine used to before Vit d. She is seemingly iron deficienct too? What possible problems could someone that age have? I'm amazed that no proper tests have been done with these symptoms. There is an assumption that somehow none of it deserves investigation.

Various nutritional deficiencies can cause brittle nails. If her nails are unusually dark, or flat or spoon-shaped, she may may have pernicious anemia (because of the signs of a B-12 deficiency).

Or she might have hyperthyroidism. One of the problems I noticed when I was having hyperthyroid symptoms last year was that my nails (that have always been strong and healthy) suddenly became brittle and weak. After I reduced my thyroid supplement dose, they have become strong again, and are no longer brittle. So obviously hyperthyroidism can cause brittle nails.

But there are many other possible causes. Brittle nails are a fairly common problem. Hypoparathyroidism can also cause brittle nails, and a magnesium deficiency can cause weak, brittle nails, for example. Insufficient protein in the diet can cause brittle nails. Brittle nails are one of the common problems experienced by vegetarians, for example.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
