Theresa, I'm guessing that you were never sensitive to eggs and/or casein, so you probably have nothing to be concerned about with those 2 foods. Everyone is lactose intolerant when they have enteriitis, and it can be tricky to tell the difference between casein and lactose issues without an EnteroLab test result. The same goes for eggs — it's not always easy to tell for sure without an EnteroLab test result. I couldn't be sure about eggs based on my trial and error testing, so I ordered the test, and the result was negative.

Or did you have EntroLab test results that showed you to be sensitive to casein and eggs?

Tex,
I had the enterolab tests:
Gluten/Antigenic Food Sensitivity Stool Panel

Fecal Anti-gliadin IgA 20 Units (Normal Range is less than 10 Units)

Fecal Anti-casein (cow’s milk) IgA 11 Units (Normal Range is less than 10 Units)

Fecal Anti-ovalbumin (chicken egg) IgA 42 Units (Normal Range is less than 10 Units)

Fecal Anti-soy IgA 18 Units (Normal Range is less than 10 Units)

TEST INTERPRETATION(S):

Interpretation of Fecal Anti-gliadin IgA: The level of intestinal anti-gliadin IgA antibody was elevated, indicative of active dietary gluten sensitivity. For optimal health; resolution or improvement of gluten-induced syndromes (mainly falling into six categories abbreviated as NAAAGS – neuropsychiatric, autoimmune, asthma, abdominal, glandular deficiencies/hyperactivity or skin diseases); resolution of symptoms known to be associated with gluten sensitivity (such as abdominal symptoms - pain, cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea and/or constipation, chronic headaches, chronic sinus congestion, depression, arthritis, chronic skin problems/rashes, fibromyalgia, and/or chronic fatigue); and prevention of small intestinal damage and malnutrition, osteoporosis, and damage to other tissues (like nerves, brain, joints, muscles, thyroid, pancreas, other glands, skin, liver, spleen, among others), it is recommended that you follow a strict and permanent gluten free diet. As gluten sensitivity is a genetic syndrome, you may want to have your relatives screened as well.

For additional information on result interpretation, as well as educational information on the subject of gluten sensitivity, please see the "FAQ Result Interpretation," "FAQ Gluten/Food Sensitivity," and "Research & Education" links on our EnteroLab.com website.

Interpretation of Fecal Anti-casein (cow’s milk) IgA: Levels of fecal IgA antibody to food antigens greater than or equal to 10 Units are indicative of an immune reaction, and hence immunologic “sensitivity” to that food. It is recommended that for any elevated fecal antibody level to a highly antigenic food such as milk, that it be removed from your diet.

Interpretation of Fecal Anti-ovalbumin (chicken egg) IgA: Levels of fecal IgA antibody to food antigens greater than or equal to 10 Units are indicative of an immune reaction, and hence immunologic “sensitivity” to that food. It is recommended that for any elevated fecal antibody level to a highly antigenic food such as egg, that it be removed from your diet.

Interpretation of Fecal Anti-soy IgA: Levels of fecal IgA antibody to food antigens greater than or equal to 10 Units are indicative of an immune reaction, and hence immunologic “sensitivity” to that food. It is recommended that for any elevated fecal antibody level to a highly antigenic food such as soy, that it be removed from your diet.
I know the level of distress caused by a food is not related to how big the numbers are. As far as I know I have never been bothered by eggs. Soy has been my worst offender.
Also some of my research on leaky gut indicates that after healing those food proteins stay inside the intestines where they are supposed to and the body no longer makes antibodies against them.

April 25 menu (Day 9 off Uceris)
breakfast:cheesy scrambled eggs, v-8 juice, coffee
lunch: bacon, cheddar cheese, potato chips, iced tea with honey
dinner: meat loaf, deviled eggs, wine
snacks: New York Cheesecake (with dulce le leche)

Heartburn returned and Norman did not.
The V-8 had been in the fridge a while (histamine response?)
The caramel topping might have exceeded the amount of sugar I can tolerate.

Hi Theresa,

I have been following your progress with great interest.

Rather than the V-8 or sugar, I suspect that you have built up enough antibodies again to egg (and possibly dairy) that you will begin to see symptoms. If this is the case, a flare may be coming on. I hope this is not the case, because I can see how much you are enjoying eating these days! Will keep my fingers crossed.

Polly,
With this disease, as you know, any small thing can cause a problem, even a little stress. It was just not quite Norman and 2 BMs, still nothing to get upset over.
AFAIK I have never reacted to eggs or cheese, just milk. However these did show up on enterolab results and I have not partaken in over a year.

April 26 menu (Day 10 off Uceris)
breakfast: bacon, scrambled eggs, almond milk, coffee
lunch: leftover meat loaf, cheddar cheese, potato chips, iced tea with honey
dinner: PIZZA! (Digiorno's thin crust supreme) wine
snacks: New York Cheesecake (with dulce le leche)

Very excited now as this was my first actual gluten challenge. In a previous life DH and I loved to have pizza night. Digiorno's is about $6, and ready in 30 minutes. I ate 1/4 of this square pizza (guess who ate the other 3/4)
No problems at all, not even heartburn! Slept like a baby last night.

Sorry, somehow I got that posted twice and couldn't figure out how to remove it.

The Chamber of Commerce Banquet is tonight. Last year I couldn't eat much of what was offered. Not sure what's on the menu for tonight, but will be on the arm of a man in his dress uniform so all is well.

Hopeful
Not sure I would ever get tired of cheesecake!
I have perfected making the perfect size cheesecake in the toaster oven (already too hot in Texas for the big one).

Watched this video this afternoon:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFYOdvTEmNU
One of the mistakes listed was overindulging when adding a food back in.

Also watched this one with Dr. Hoffman (wrote an intro for the latest "Breaking The Vicious Cycle":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTCoPf-MJlI

These are lengthy, but now that I have learned to watch on my TV while doing needle point it doesn't seem so long.

It took a year of watching every single bite that went in my mouth to get here. Even then I credit the last month of glutamine and magtein with the final healing, I actually noticed my tummy getting flatter and no gurgles or grumbles. My hope is to stay on SCD for about a year, that is what is recommended, a year after all symptoms are under control.

I am hoping I am one of the lucky ones that will be able to control the beast. There are many that have lived for years on some modification of diet...just going back to the beginning SCD when there is a problem. Or increasing the glutamine, or both.

I think those on the SCD group are amazed that I am starting the diet as a way to eat LESS restricted.

Theresa,

What brand of Magtein do you use? Also, how much glutamine are you taking.

Thanks,
Donna

Donna,
I use this Magtein:
http://www.amazon.com/Doctors-Best-Magn ... ds=magtein
I take one with breakfast and one at bedtime.

This is the glutamine powder:
http://www.amazon.com/Body-Fortress-Glu ... ine+Powder
It has 4.5 g per teaspoon, I usually take 1 teaspoon in iced tea between breakfast and lunch and another between lunch and supper.
It works best on an empty stomach, the dosage can be increased if needed.
