antibiotics before dental appt.
Dear helpful friends- had dental cleaning appt. And took 4 of 500 mg amoxicillin. My body went nuts with diarrhea. Had to return early from a weekend trip. Need to take these because of knee replacement 3 years ago. Have been taking entocort since Sept. And down to 1 pill a day and doing well. Anyone else with.this problem? On another note- how bad in taking Holy Communion wafer once a week? Should I give that up? Catholic people? Sandy with micro. Lymphocytic colitis diagnosed in July of 2014. Am 71 and very active with golf and swimming.

I'm sorry to hear about the reaction. Amoxicillin is one of the antibiotics that has a less-than-ideal reputation for those of us with MC. It can be tough to find an antibiotic that will do the job without causing a reaction. I recently had a reaction to Bactrim DS that I was taking in connection with some dental work. I'll try Ciprofloxacin next time. Cipro has some serious black box warnings regarding the risk of tendonitis, torn ligaments, and possible peripheral neuropathy issues, but it virtually never causes any MC reactions for any of us.
Some dental hygienists use cleaning compounds that contain gluten, so that's another possible cause of your reaction. Gluten free cleaning products are available, but if they are not already in use in a dental office they would have to be ordered ahead of time. Be sure to discuss that with your dental hygienist a week or 2 before your next cleaning, just in case they are unaware of the risk to patients.
For many/most of us, the amount of gluten in one of those communion wafers is enough to trigger a reaction. Gluten-free wafers are available from several suppliers, but a few churches will not allow them, in particular the Catholic Church. If my memory is not playing tricks on me though, I believe there have been some special exceptions made in certain cases. Maybe someone else has some undated information on this.

Dear tex- thanks for the quick reply. Will check into cleaning solutions at dentist. Also try to get cipro next time. My system still a little unstable after a week. Been checking my meds and vitamins and found soy oil in D3 pills ! It's been a struggle to heal. Wore diapers for 10 months before entocort. This site has been the best for info. Many thanks. Sandy

Holy Eucharist for Catholics-GF Wafers
I have LMC and have been receiving a "gluten free" wafer for a year with no averse reaction. If you would like to investigate, your Archdiocese/Diocese will provide you with information. This "host" is manufactured by Sisters/Nuns in the Midwest. Although everyone is different, of course, this solution has worked for me. Contact your pastor and receive more information. I simply appear 15 minutes prior to the start of mass and inform the Celebrant that I am at Mass and require a GF Host. The Parish Priests all know me now and it is not an issue...

Catholic Eucharist and "Rice Wafers"
There is a Catholic 'regulation' that there has to be some very small portion of 'wheat' in the Eucharist for Catholics. These Sisters have produced a wafer that is virtually GF. If it is not 'working' for you, it was suggested that I personally consume the consecrated wine. At times when I am late for Mass and don't get to Church in time to inform the Priest I am in the Congregation, then I consume the consecrated wine. This works for me too. Don't give up!
