Well, not only do I have a lovely head cold, but we got freezing rain in the night and our driveway is not passable. You can't even stand on it. I went out to put some rock salt down and about 1/3 of the way down the hill my feet just went out from under me. I've called in to work until the roads improve.

Enjoy your time at home Katie! I wish I had that option but NOOOOOOOOOO, I have to go to work! 
We also had rain turn to snow overnight which left the roads pretty slippery and schools either on a 2 hour delay or closed. Cars were in the ditch everywhere you looked!
Be careful if you decide to go into work later!
PS: Hope you didn't hurt yourself when the feet went skyward!

Wow!
Being from CA, missing school/work due to weather is a *totally* foreign concept!! I guess in Vermont they don't question if you are iced/snowed in? Do people ever try and take advantage if they just want a day off (or to go skiing
) - I'm genuinely curious here...If schools have a *delay* - do they run later in the afternoon, or is it just a shortened day? It must be a nightmare for working parents!

Well, I made it in. Main roads weren't too bad by the time I headed for work. Driveway was still icy, but at least it was starting to soften as the temp had gone from 34 to 45.
Mary, I never thought really about all those places that don't get snow days! Growing up we used to do snow dances and pray for school cancellation. Heck if at 6AM the fire horn blew in town, it meant no school! Most schools in the area were on 2 hour delay here or closed today (Actually now that I think of it, our kids haven't been to school this week...Monday was Martin Luther King day, Tuesday they had an inservice for teachers, and now a snow day). ON the delay days they usually run abreviated periods and end at the same time. Early releases happen sometimes too and as long as they feed the kids its considered a full day of school. Snow days they build into the calander (usually 5) to meet the state requirements for # of days in school and if they have no school for more than that, they have to make them up at the end of the year. I noticed today my Mom's school was on a delay, when they usually just cancel. But one more cancelation and they go into make up mode. I remember a couple years ago, one nearby district was going saturdays in May to make up the time.

Hi Katy. I grew up with snow days too. But being in a small town, everyone walked to school anyway, and it was rare that they thought we couldn't do that. The reason it would close was only if our teachers couldn't make it, they lived out of town mostly. But we walked to school in -40, bundled up tight, scarfs and mitts and ski pants and so forth.

Now I am such a wimp, I can't handle too much of the cold stuff. But here we have been getting more rain then snow, lately. They say it is supposed to change to freezing rain later on today, and snow for tomorrow, but we shall see.

Wendy, snow doesn't bother me for driving at all. Most Vermonters are pretty intrepid when it comes to the white stuff. Now ice is another story. You have no control over that. Snow actually provides some traction. Slush is worse and ice is, well fine unless you have to stop!
Its been pouring here all day. I'll be suprised if there aren't flooded roads after all this too. My way home shouldn't be affected though unless a catch basin is blocked with the snow we got on Saturday night.

What a dedicated employee you are to brave icy roads to get to work.
I'm with you on the ice thing... 2 foot of snow in my Subaru no problem, but a layer of ice scares the heck out of me. You have NO control.

Snow never bothered me when I was younger...but the older I get the less I like snow and Ice which we have gotten in West Texas. I grew up in California and snow was what we saw only if we went to the mountains and like Mary said...snow days were un -heard of. No I wasn't born In Texas but I got here as quick as I could. I guess I am getting fearful in my older age. Love Oma
