Chili Pepper Eating Contests

Post by Lilja »

Hi all,

I don't know how this started, where it came from, and why it's become so popular. My son is throwing a chili pepper eating contest party tonight. I didn't know how to react, but this can not be healthy, or what?

They speak Danish/Norwegian in the video, but that is not so important. Just looking at their faces after having eaten a Habanero, is quite funny.

With my MC, I would never dare to challenge my stomach with this!

I wish you all a nice weekend :-)

Hi Lilia,

It is claimed that chilis aid digestion. Back before I had to reorganize my diet, I used to eat chilis regularly. In fact, the only times when
I ate certain foods, such as fried chicken, Mexican food, etc., without chilis was when no chilis were available.

But unlike many of the chiliheads of today, I didn't eat chilis to punish myself — I ate them because they really bring out the flavor of most foods. Consequently, I always limited my choices to jalapeños and serranos, nothing hotter. I wouldn't touch habaneros, because they are way too hot to be useful for flavor enhancement, IMO. Here's a link to a chart that shows the Scoville heat rating (relative hotness) of a few of the common types of chilis.

Thanks, I hope you have a wonderful, symptom-free weekend, too.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi Tex,

Thank you for the link, which I have forwarded to my son.

I have a special experience with chili peppers. In 1992 I discovered that I had roundworms in my stomach... I freaked out!

I took all the medications available, nothing worked. I lost 15 kilos and was a wreck. Then I got the idea I would "freeze them out", so I ate huge amounts of red chili pepper and garlic. I did this for one month. I got rid of them, and started to gain weight again.

My GP didn't believe me, and said that it was the medication. I know that it was thanks to the chili pepper and the garlic.

A quite disgusting story, with a happy ending

This was years ago. I used to work with a lady who's family came from Denmark. She was really into eating hot peppers. She did it for health reasons she would say. She had books on the topic that she would show us. She enjoyed telling us how the hot peppers kept her healthy. I wasn't one to disagree. She seemed pretty healthy. I would joke though that I was worried one day she would be placed in charge of the companies annual barbecue!
