Myalgia - related to MC?

Post by cinemom »

I have had two instances in the last few of weeks of what I can only describe as whole body myalgia - the entire body hurting, stiffness, joints ache - worse than I've ever felt before. So not typical of any minor aches that I've had in the past.

Incidence #1 may have been a result of taking one high strength Probiotic (100 Billion) that I bought at Whole Foods. Within hours I felt like I imagine a bad case of Fibromyalgia might feel like. I was just sick, period. Pain everywhere, muscle and joint aches. It lasted the whole day, and I felt 50% better the next day. The third day I felt nearly normal. I returned the bottle and got my money back. But I am not sure if the probiotis had anything to do with the pain. And I can't think of anything else that it could have been.

Incidence #2 was about two weeks later. I was cooking up a storm on a Sunday recently, doing more than I usually do...cutting, chopping, washing, drying, etc. I really overused my hands and arms. My back got stiff, as usual, at the end of the day of work. I must have worked for 6 hours straight with little rest. That night, I went to bed, and I felt so much pain in my arms, shoulders, especially my dominant right arm and hand. I actually moaned and shed tears, it was more pain than I am used to feeling. And I have a high pain threshold. In the past, I have had muscle aches from overuse, and feel the pain the next few days, but this was different. It hurt more than usual, but the next day, I had no leftover aches/pain. So very strange, and scary too.

Has anyone experienced this? Can this be in any way related to MC?

Boy, I'm afraid to overdo things now! I'm taking my time in the kitchen with a little less gusto now, and have more energy week by week than when I was first diagosed. But these myalgia-like experiences were strong and scary.

I have fibromyalgia so understand what you are describing...

my experience has been, as we heal, if you ingest a major trigger you get the pain that you describe in incidence 1.
what were the ingredients of the probiotic? did it have dairy or yeast?

the other time this type of pain has happened to me is when I am fighting a cold or flu type thing.... I get a sore throat and all over pain. It has only happened like this since my MC Dx. when it happens, I take extra Vit D3, Zinc, Vit C, to help the body cope with the increased inflammation and fight the germs/virus...

on the fibromyalgia side of things, I have got it very much minimised since I fixed most of the mineral/nutrient deficiencies, namely magnesium. anytime I get pain, I use extra of the magnesium spray.

One of the reasons the pain with fibromyalgia can be so bad, is that the muscles 'suck' the magnesium out of your bones.
keep in mind there is no reliable/easy magnesium level test. Current blood tests are not adequate/accurate to gauge magnesium levels.

hope this helps

Just wanted to add that I was on pain meds for years with 'all over' pain in joints and muscles. This stopped on the restricted diet and returns for a day or too if I am cross contaminated, or eat something by mistake.

IMO, Gabes' mention of magnesium with regard to body pain is right on target. If I recall correctly, it was Chris Kressor who pointed out that a magnesium deficiency is often misdiagnosed as fibromyalgia. And it's common knowledge that magnesium deficiency is at epidemic levels in the general population today. Most people are not even aware of it, but if we develop an IBD, or some other AI disease that imposes increased demands on our immune system, then such problems are quickly amplified.

Back when I was reacting, I wasn't aware of any of this information, so I have no idea whether or not gluten was the sole cause of the pain, or if I had a magnesium deficiency, but the odds are pretty high that I did. Most days I felt as if I had been hit by a truck. Even my hair hurt.

I get pains now if ingest something I react to. In my calf muscles and sometimes fingers. Of course we can't take NSAIDs which sometimes help. But if you reset your diet they will go anyway

Yes, these aches are like nothing I have felt before. Since diagnosis, I quickly got off the couple of meds that I was regularly taking, thinking they could be involved in the actual cause of MC. And I am doing just fine without the meds. I do not take pain killers unless really needed, but I did have to take 2 Tylenol with incidence #2 just so that I could sleep. It worked. I have not had the aches/pains since incidence #2, which is exactly a week. So I'm not going to consider myself a fibromyalgia sufferer just yet. How do the docs diagnose that, I wonder?

At least my hair didn't hurt, Tex! LOL I wouldn't be surprised if I am deficient in magnesium. I am deficient in Vit D (19:30+). I now have a prescription strength D to take. I should start taking a Multi Vit/Mineral as well; I have not been in the habit of taking vitamins with any regularity. And I decided to take NOTHING as soon as I was diagnosed, so that I could start healing. But since I'm progressing and having some minor success, it is probably a good time now to start with vitamin/mineral supplements. I have started drinking a German Mineral Water, but it is carbonated. Can't find a still mineral water.

Wow! Tex it's nice to hear someone else with that description of having their hair hurt. I know that feeling and never described it to anyone out of fear they'd think I was nuts or overly dramatic.

Interesting Fibromyalgia article by an alt practitioner

Post by Betsbrooks »

I came across this discussion of fibromyalgia, lyme disease, etc. while clicking around. It has an interesting theory that many diseases are from underlying infections and toxins, and triggered by stress, and that conventional medical treatment masks the symptoms and even makes them worse. It made me think of the medical mantra "First, do no harm.":

Thanks for the interesting article, Bets! I haven't had any further myalgia symptoms since my previous post, thank goodness!
