Dental materials in crowns

Post by Alohagirl »

Aloha - just wondering if anyone knows of dental materials that have sparked problems in people with MC. I broke a crown in December and that is when GI problems began (or accelerated). They made a same day crown & then put in the permanent one 2-3 mos later. I have had several other crowns in the past that never were tender afterward but never used that same day crown (building one in my mouth so to speak) method. Still cannot chew on that side of my mouth & it is tender. I also wonder if release of mercury is an issue. Any input is much appreciated! Alohagirl

Hi,

I'm not aware of any problems associated with the materials used in dental crowns, but dental work can certainly cause problems for anyone who has MC. Were you given an antibiotic? Many types of medications are known to trigger MC, and antibiotics are one of them.

Also, were your teeth cleaned during one of your visits? Some dental cleaning compounds contain gluten, and this can be a trigger for most of us (because virtually all of us are sensitive to gluten). However if you were not avoiding gluten at the time, then I doubt that you would have noticed any difference.

It's possible that 1 or more of the chemicals involved in the procedure of making the mold for the cap, or the temporary cap, or the adhesive for the cap might have caused problems, but that would be uncommon. I recently had a couple of caps done without any adverse effects on my MC. Like you though, one of the teeth is still sensitive, so I can't use it, though the sensitivity seems to be slowly fading away. Prior to the caps though, the antibiotics used with root canal work caused major problems for me.

Overall, whenever dental work is needed, the biggest risk for someone who has MC is the antibiotic/s.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

My experience with crowns is that troublesome teeth were causing excess bacteria etc under the crown.

The issues are not obvious in normal check ups, it was only noticed when I had CT scans done due to multiple dental issues...
Once I had the crowns removed, and the crumbling teeth underneath them also removed. Did lots of zinc brushing and lingual coQ10, my teeth and gums improved, and my gut improved.
Having constant bacteria etc festering, and going into my gut every time I was drinking and eating was hindering my gut healing.
Best thing I did was getting the teeth removed.

Dental issues are common for MC'ers. And for a few crowns and/or bridge work has not provided good solution. I know Polly and Stanz have also had major issues with crowns etc.

Hope this helps

On the other hand I have a number of crowns in my mouth and they have never given me any trouble. They were all done as yours was done, a temporary crown followed by a permanent crown although it was only a few weeks between the temporary crown and the permanent crown rather than a few months.
