Hi Steven,
I had to take a couple of regimens of antibiotics a few months ago because of root canal work. I used Bactrim DS and had a serious reaction (it depleted my magnesium and caused all sorts of serious problems). But maybe that was just me. My doctors insisted that Bactrim is normally quite safe.
Then I tried Cipro. It caused my tinnitus to become worse, but no GI issues.
If I have to take an antibiotic in the future, I think I'll see if my doctor will OK azithromycin (Z-pak). It's hard to win. And of course we all respond differently to various medications.
Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

Good morning Tex,
Oh my I'm so sorry that you had to go through all of that just from them darn antibiotics..
Thank you so much for sharing your unfortunate experiences with the different antibiotics as it greatly helps in my decision even though I'm even more scared now lol.. take them and i risk a flare of some degree.. don't take them and I guess there is serious consequences as dentist mentioned death. can't win and it is always something with me..
I hurt my foot at work at the end of May and I'll now be going back in a few days on light duty but it will be a totally different work shift... 7-3:30 AM instead of 2nd shift.. I was on such a good bathroom routine along with diet that had me on basically a clock work 8am waste removal.. Now that along with the taking of an antibiotic if i choose to has me really nervous I'll have an accident in the pants as there is no bathroom access without walking a good distance and having to take elevators or stairs. And with a bad foot still I can't make a mad dash..
I did take z-pack (without GI reactions that i recall) back in the fall for an expected sinus infection but i think that was just the root canal tooth that was infected causing the headache that the walk in clinic diagnosed as sinus infection. Maybe that would be my best try in this situation? Just don't know if the dentist will agree with that choice for mouth infection
Ugh wish I could just go at the infection all natural but the dentist has me scared poopless and now reading that you had to take a couple regimens for root canal work and I know you said you have a good immune system and don't normally have to take antibiotics really has me thinking I need to take them.
He (me assuming by what was going on in my mouth) repacked the old root canal work that was falling out because i didn't have the work on it finished because my off days coincided with their closed days.. Does it sound like my infection is in the old dead tooth area? in the gum maybe? Could He of packed the infection in when filled root canal in? so many questions I should have asked there but he seemed in a hurry to just right the script and that's all and i was kinna out of it because the thought of taking antibiotics had my tongue tied up.
My mouth feels better than yesterday and I have been gargling with salt water but no zinc as I have none and I dont really know how I incorporate that in with the salt and I don't really feel like playing dr google at this time in the AM to just really get my nerves reved up to start the day. Think I'll just lay back down for an hr to slow and calm down as its not doing any good to stress the body out.. I just am a naturally nervous nelli person and that's not good with GI problems.
Thanks all for letting me ramble! I know what I should do and I know I'm wrong to be asking what to do when I guess their is serious consequence if I don't follow dentist prescription order.. It just helps incredibly to read what others with the same MC diagnosis try in these and other situations to try and get through with the least GI complications. I know we're all different but we can still learn, share, and can compare notes from each other.
Again I really appreciate the support and I don't know what I would do without all of you (hugs)
Have a great morning and day all - my ears and eyes are open if anybody would like to add to this thread.

Steven,
Root canal work sometimes results in nerve pain, but if your dentist actually confirmed an infection, then you have an infection.
Any pocket of bacteria trapped below (outside) the tooth however, may be available to generate infections, especially if they should enter the bloodstream. And they are difficult to get to with antibiotics, because of their location. I have toughed out ordinary tooth infections many times in the past and lived to tell about it, but they can become rather intense at times, and infections associated with root canal work make me nervous, for some reason or other.
If the problem were just surface bacteria, that could be handled by an antiseptic mouth rinse, such as Peridex (chlorhexidine gluconate 0.12 %), but an infection under the tooth is a much tougher situation.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.

That risk is exactly why root canal procedures are so closely associated with the use of antibiotics. If a few bacteria happen to become trapped in one of the root canals, or below the tooth, they will always be available to cause trouble later. Any bacteria trapped in a properly-sealed root canal will be isolated forever, and should not present any problems unless the tooth is opened up again.Steven wrote:Could He of packed the infection in when filled root canal in?

Thanks so much for the very informative post and it was most definitely very helpful as always!
when something makes you nervous for one reason i take note and i wont play around with it and just take my chances with the antibiotic.. now o pick which one.. I'm nervous about cipro now after reading the possible complications and side effects not related to GI.. They prescribed me Amoxicillian last time and i still have them. 500MG 3 times a day for 10 days.. Can that one be rough for us with MC?
Azithromycin i took last fall and don't recall any BAD side effects or GI troubles. You mentioned next time you might go for that one if dr allows.. Do you think the z-pack would be a OK choice to try again? ir is it not wise to repeat an antibiotic too much? Thats the one i feel most comfortable going with again if the dentist gives the OK that it would work for this situation.
Again, thanks so so much! I'm off to the chiropractor for my foot injury and I'll make my call to the dentist after i get home to go over the antibiotic dilemma.

Yes, it's a very common cause of MC flares, and it also seems to be more closely associated with causing C. diff infections than most other antibiotics. However, for those who can tolerate it, it may be a decent choice.Steven wrote:They prescribed me Amoxicillian last time and i still have them. 500MG 3 times a day for 10 days.. Azithyromycin is usually considered to be a good choice for dental infections, abscesses, etc. Most of us tend to stick with any antibiotic that we find to be safe for us until proven otherwise, or until it becomes ineffective. Rotating antibiotics is a good idea in theory, but it's a lot like trying to rotate foods when we're on an elimination diet — if we're only eating a handful of different foods to begin with, a decent rotation program is just about impossible to carry out successfully.Steven wrote:Do you think the z-pack would be a OK choice to try again? ir is it not wise to repeat an antibiotic too much? Hi everybody,
Hope all is going as well as possible in your lives.
Just wanted to update and say my run with z-pack didn't cause any additional GI problems and my infection seems to being going away.. tues night i took the last pill.
Weird thing.. Had a eventful/excessive night of drinking (i very rarely do that since being diagnosed last yr) with family for fathers day last Saturday night.. I wonder why always after consuming alcohol I have type 4 BM's on the bristol chart before shortly (within a day or few bm's later) I'm back to the 5/6 on the Bristol Scale. Is it maybe because alcohol is absorbed in the stomach?
Anywho - Tomorrow I get the joy of going back to my job valet parking after being off for a foot injury since May 29th.. I'm going to be sore for sure and hopefully my foot holds up!
Good night and day all!
Oh and thanks again for all the great advice and support in this thread.. It tremendously helps especially with keeping the stress in check that none of us can ill afford any more of.

I have no idea why your BMs would improve after consuming alcohol. One would expect the opposite effect, since alcohol is known to cause leaky gut.
Thanks for the update.
