Hi Joan,
Thanks for that interesting link. I had not heard of berberine.
I have been encouraged recently to see more concern and action surrounding pesticides. Just this past week, a lawsuit that had been brought against the EPA by the Center for Biologic Diversity was settled. As a result, the EPA is now required to analyze the impact of atrazine and glyphosate (think Roundup) on 1500 endangered plants and animals. The last time EPA considered glyphosate impact was 23 years ago - when only about 10 million pounds per year were used. It is now up to 300 million pounds per year, mainly because of the genetically-modified corn and soy crops and super weeds created by the pesticides.
I certainly hope that the EPA will look at the impact of these pesticides on HUMANS, too, not just endangered plants and animals. Research is finding health problems in those who were exposed to these pesticides. Atrazine and 2,4 D have well-documented adverse health effects, but Roundup is just now seriously being looked at. A recent study showed double the risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in those with glyphosate exposure:
Study: Glyphosate Doubles Risk Of Lymphoma

Scientists at the International Agency for Research on Cancer have found what appears to be a strong link between pesticide exposure and a blood cancer called non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Analyzing 44 individual research projects published since 1980, the scientists, writing in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, said that people exposed to the weed killer glyphosate, marked by Monsanto under the brand name Roundup, had double the risk of developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Those exposed to 2,4-D, another potent weed killer marketed by Dow Chemical, were 40 percent more likely to develop this disease.
The authors, scientists who work in the IARC Section of Environment and Radiation in Lyon, France, theorized that these pesticides were causing genetic mutations in white blood cells, thereby weakening the body’s immune system and ability to fight off disease.

I saw this morning Dr. Mercola wrote an article about the potential problems seen with Round Up. A mention is made that testing for the general public is now available.
Details are not given, but the write up also briefly mentions that a researcher personally had gut issues, that he believes cleared up after cleaning up his diet, avoiding food where Round UP had been used.
"Researcher Reveals Monsanto Has Known Since 1981 That Glyphosate Promotes Cancer"
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/artic ... ancer.aspx
snippet from his article:
"...Meanwhile, the Organic Consumers Association (OCA) has joined forces with the Feed the World Project, launching the world's first glyphosate testing for the general public.6,7,8,9 As reported by the OCA:
"The project, with specific focus on women and children in the US, is offering the first-ever validated public LC/MS/MS glyphosate testing for urine, water and soon breast milk... The testing OCA, Feed the World and many other organizations will begin offering [on April 22] will allow everyone who wants to know whether or not, and to what extent, they personally have been exposed to glyphosate.
We expect that once the public learns how widespread the exposure has been—in the context of the recent report from the World Health Organization that glyphosate is a probable human carcinogen—public pressure will eventually force governments worldwide to finally ban Roundup."
The Importance of Bacteria for Optimal Health
Dr. Samsel understood that his gut problems were related to bacteria and that just as healthy soil needs beneficial microbes, so does your gut. This was something instilled in him by his grandfather, who taught him that healthy bacteria in the soil help grow healthy crops. Not surprisingly, when he cleaned up his diet, his gut dysbiosis cleared up, as did a number of neurological problems he'd started experiencing.
At that point, he began delving deeper into the science of the human microbiome. Many are unaware of the fact that glyphosate is patented as an antibiotic. It's designed to kill bacteria, which is one of the primary ways it harms both soils and human health. Recent research has even concluded that Roundup (and other pesticides) promotes antibiotic resistance. Dr. Samsel was actually the person who dug up the patents showing glyphosate is a biocide and an antibiotic..."

Blueberry,
Where is that Monsanto patent (to use glyphosate as an antibiotic) that so many people mention as additional proof that glyphosate is so dangerous to human health. I've searched, and I can't find it. The only possibility I can see is the 1990 patent referenced below. And it certainly doesn't seem to make any claims about patenting antibiotic properties. There are no mentions of "antibiotic" that I can see. There is a mention of anthelmintic properties in one of the many references:
Glyphosate-resistant plants US 4940835 A
I can't help but wonder if they are simply confused or pretending that the Bacillus thuringiensis DNA patent claims are somehow part of the glyphosate patent claims. They are definitely not, of course. Their only similarity is the fact that they are both GMO innovations.
Bacillus thuringiensis toxins EP 0228838 B1
And of course Monsanto used this technology to actually alter the DNA of the seed to incorporate Bt resistance, covered by this patent:
Nucleic acids encoding anthelmintic agents and plants made therefrom US 7919680 B2l
Is there another patent that I'm overlooking? One that does specify invoking actual antibiotic properties in a GMO seed product? I would dearly love to see what it actually says (rather than reading about undocumented claims based on some activist's interpretation of someone else's interpretation of someone else's interpretation, etc., etc., of what the patent actually says. If the one I cited above is the one they are all talking about, then they are all obviously basing their claims on nothing.
Since it's very unlikely that they would make such claims about nothing, I would surely like to see what they are talking about. And please don't flood me with links to blogs that only cite other bolgs. I am searching for the actual patent application. It has to be online, somewhere. If anyone can point me to it, I would be very appreciative.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
HI!
I found this online, and I think it answers the question. The answer is written by a Monsanto scientist, who says that the company did include antimicrobial use in its patent......claiming that the reason was to cover any potential (reasonable) uses that may arise over time.

Polly,
Getting older is not for the faint of heart. I knew that I was ignorant, senile, and set in my ways, but now I'm apparently going blind, because I can't even see whatever it was that you posted that you found online.
Thank you anyway though, I appreciate your efforts.
Love,

Thanks Polly,
I was curious, because I didn't even realize that it had any antimicrobial properties.

P. S. I forgot to mention hearing loss because of all the tinnitus in my previous post.
