Mg overdose. I am an idiot.

Post by C.U.B. girl »

Back with my annual flare. This one was definitely triggered by stress -- we decided to downsize in order to get a house without stairs and one that was smaller and easier to take care of. Signed a contract to build in March; since then, it was packing, fixing up the old house so we can eventually sell it, going through the mortgage application process (not for the feint of heart since the housing bust), hiring movers, finally moving earlier this month, getting the new house set up, and prepping for a garage sale at the old one (which was yesterday and today).

All of that of course set off a flare, which I'm trying to handle, as usual, without medical intervention. I had a couple of days of improvement this past week, so I thought I'd try the Magnesium Threonate I just got. It's the kind that's supposed to cross the blood-brain barrier, which ordinary Mg supplements don't do. Read the instructions on the label: "Take three capsules a day; two during the day, and one 1 -2 hrs. before bedtime". So I popped two about mid-afternoon, and the third around 7 PM…..

At 1:30 AM I began what I can only describe as Colonoscopy Clean-out, Lite ……. By 6:00 AM I had warmed the seat on the potty at least six times, and had another day of a garage sale ahead….. I then re-read the instructions, where I found this: "Begin with one capsule and gradually work up to three". Too late….. the damage was done. My gut is now back to square one, after the all-out assault from the Mg, and is protesting the attack with vigor.

Anyway -- it's nice to be back in the company of folks who understand, and won't judge my idiocy too harshly….

Cindy,

What a bummer. I never would have expected that after the high ratings given to it by the likes of Dr. Mercola. Thank you so much for posting your experience, because it will save me from going through the trouble of trying it.

As you are probably aware, topical magnesium oils or sprays are safe for the gut, and so is oral magnesium glycinate (chelated magnesium). At least no one has reported any bad D experiences with either treatment to date.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger — I probably would have done the same thing. Thanks for posting, and I hope that your system will get back to normal very soon.

Thanks, Tex. I could swear I had read somewhere that Mg threonate didn't have the laxative effects that some types of Mg carry, which is why I wasn't too concerned about downing so many capsules. Or perhaps that's true only if you start slowly and gradually work your way up to a higher dosage -- like the directions said to do in the first place… :mallet:

Meantime, back to eating only meat for a while. Darn glad I'm not a vegetarian…

That was my impression also, that it shouldn't promote D. Maybe I misread the literature and just assumed that was the case.

Hi Cindy...

I've been taking Mag LThreonate from the Mercola site and I started out with one in the morning, then I worked up to one in the morning and one at dinner time, then on week three I took two in the morning and one at dinner time, I am at week 4 and am taking the normal dose 2 in the morning and 2 at dinner time and I haven't seen that issue. I am leaning more towards stress or heat and anything else that could have set you off.

I also use a Mag oil spray in the morning and night, and occasionally do an Epsom soak these days. I do hope your flare resolves quickly
Cheers
Erica
