Theresa,

I checked on amazon, but they do not have any Imodium AD caplets. They have the new "relief" one and the liquid AD, but no caplets. Sigh. Thanks for trying to find it.

DH found some Imodium AD on the shelves at Wal-Mart! Will be helpful on the trip to Cleveland for my Mom's memorial service.

I don't go to Walmart. Not for anything!
I still have some from the BIG D days. Didn't use them up because of my C dominance. Today I needed one. Why? No idea.

I live/work in Cincinnati and loperamide is not in short supply for me. I can just walk out from the behind the counter and grab a few bottles.

Bearcat,

The liquid form has never been in short supply. It has always been available everywhere. But up until recently, it (like all the other generic versions of Imodium A-D) contained a lactose derivative, and lactose derivatives tend to cause problems for many people who have MC, so we try to avoid those ingredients. The Imodium A-D caplets were the only safe (commonly available) form.

I haven't been keeping up with it, because I can't use it. With an ileostomy, it might come in handy, but it makes me dizzy, so it's off my radar. But in reviewing the ingredient lists of their products now (on their website), I see that the situation has been reversed — the caplets now contain a derivative of lactose, and the liquid version does not. Apparently all of us missed their announcement that they were going to change their ingredients. Not only that, but it's the first ingredient listed for the caplets, so that indicates that we're not talking about just trace amounts. Click on "Ingredients" on this site:

Does this match the label on the products on your shelves, or is my browser going nuts?

Kroger makes their own brand of loperamide, which is the one I use. I'll check it out and see what I can find. Although only individuals with Kroger brand would be able to benefit should the results be favorable.

There are dozens of store brands, and strangely, it appears that now none of them contain any contraindicated ingredients, except for xanthan gum. I didn't check them all, but the ones that I checked do not appear to contain any lactose-derived ingredients, so the formulations have definitely changed.

http://www.drugs.com/otc/loperamide-hydrochloride.html

The formulations have been reversed. Now Imodium A-D, which was previously the only safe brand, appears to be the only one containing lactose. Here is the inactive ingredient list for the caplets:
anhydrous lactose, carnauba wax, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, pregelatinized starch
But the new formulation of the liquid version contains:
anhydrous citric acid, caramel color, D&C yellow no.10, FD&C blue no.1, flavor, glycerin, microcrystalline cellulose and carboxymethylcellulose sodium, propylene glycol, purified water, simethicone emulsion, sodium benzoate, sucralose, titanium dioxide, xanthan gum

Weird, to say the least. Maybe manufacturers are beginning to listen to users
(except of course for the manufacturer of Imodium A-D).

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
