Hi...New to the Forum

Post by Tarleigh »

Hi Everyone, I'm new to the forum so hope this is posted in the right place.
I have had microscopic colitis for almost 3 years but only found out what it was after I had a colonoscopy and a biopsy was done. The doctor put me on salazopyrin 500g 3 times a day but it did nothing so after 4 weeks the does was doubled that gave me a bad reaction, food made me feel sick and had a metal taste in my mouth so I was taken off it. I have been tested for all the kinds of intollerance to foods but its all clear. I tried cutting out all gluten but it didnt help. I read on here a few months ago about the Keifer drinking yogurt and have been taking that everyday along with a probiotic called innerhealth for IBS and it has cleared up the problem..! back to normal but the past few days the loose poo is back, only once a day but wondered if it was because I was either having a flare up or is it too much probiotic I'm taking.

thanks

Hello from a fellow Aussie!

if you cut out all gluten and it didnt help, it is highly likely you have other major food intolerance's -
many here react to multiple things and depending on the type of food intolerance testing you had it may not correlate with what is causing MC reactions...
many react to Dairy, Soy, Eggs.

Further, one thing that does affect MC'ers when flaring is fibre, in early days we have to avoid salads, raw fruit, nuts etc
again if you were having high fibre ingredients when you gave up gluten, then you may not have been able to gauge full benefit of giving up gluten

if you are reacting to dairy, then innerhealth may be contributing that. There are some good non dairy based pro-biotics

The other common inflammation causer for MC'er is histamine/mast cells. and would explain why you might have issues one week, but be ok the next...

hope this helps

Hi Gabes
yes another aussie !!! you are not that far from me, I'm in sydney.
wow the whole food thing is a mine field, I did try cutting out dairy but I would have still been eating nuts and veggies, I dont eat salad stuff only tomatoes and dont like fruit, dont really eat eggs much, you dont realize that fibre is in other foods. Gonna have to do a lot of reading

MC is very different to other IBD's.

take some time and do some reading on the posts.
if you read the posts in the success stories area you will see the type of eating plans and changes others had did.

tomatos can be an issue for some..
I also cant do too much processed flours products.
I eat big serves of protein and cooked veges most of the time.

The other aspect is Vit D3, when our body is inflammed we deplete the levels a fair bit. so it is good to supplement, I use bioceuticals Vit D3 lingual drops.

Happy reading..
and keep warm!

LOL the keep warm, so cold !!! hate it
I do take Vit D as my levels were low but have been that way for over 10 years before all this started. Yes tomatoes have always given me the runs, soups the worst. I will have a read of the success stories.
thanks

Hi,Tarleigh. Welcome to our group. You mentioned food testing. Have you had stool testing done by EnteroLab? I think that's the best way to find out what foods are truly triggers for you. www.enterolab.com You've come to the right place for support on your journey.

Hi Tarleigh,

Welcome to our Internet family. To add to what Gabes mentioned about vitamin D, a vitamin D deficiency weakens our immune system, and that significantly raises the risk of developing an IBD or some other autoimmune disease, so that was probably at least part of the reason why you developed MC. Please try to get your vitamin D level up into the middle of the normal range, because if you have been deficient for 10 years, you are at a relatively high risk of developing additional AI diseases if your vitamin D level remains low.

Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Tarleigh
the Enterolab testing mentioned by Marcia, is a USA based lab that does intolerance testing via a poop sample. It is the most reliable test. Albeit, to do it from Aus with international courier costs it can be pretty pricey.

At the time of diagnosis i couldnt afford it, so I did elimination diet/kept a food journal and managed to figure out my major food triggers, and most of my medium level food triggers within 6 months or so.

Welcome Tarleigh! This is an amazing source of information!!!

I ended up having to do a total elimination diet (alllll the way down to chicken broth made with just chicken) and added back stuff systematically. It took some serious discipline, but I'll tell you, a couple of d accidents in public convinced me that discipline and really boring food for months on end was a worthwhile choice.

My mix of tolerable foods (like everyone's) seems to have no rhyme or reason, and without the total elimination diet I never would have had any idea that stuff that most people find totally fine (spinach, butternut squash) causes me serious trouble, but I can also tolerate stuff some people have a terrible time with (dairy!). I also find that stress and days of high mold (another allergen for me) makes some of my tolerated foods intolerable, and I have to go back to totally safe foods for a day or two to re-settle the innards.

If you have any kind of joint pain, I'd suggest you skip nightshades (hot and sweet peppers, tomatoes, regular potatoes (as opposed to sweet potatoes), eggplant) for a couple of weeks and see if that helps. All of them and garlic and onions cause me joint pain about 24 hrs later. Yes, those were all my favorite foods.....my garden was all tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, garlic and onions. *sigh*

Anyway, welcome again!

Laura

Thanks everyone for the welcome. I have had a poo test done over here and it came back all OK , I have been trying the diet and so far I can eat wheat things, Dairy too , but limit it tomatoes can upset me a bit, I have been on the probotics for ISB and they are helping, I was drinking the keifer also and for 3 months perfect but then the loose poo can back Doc said I was having too much so stopped the IBS tabs and that did not help so have now stopped the keifer and back on the IBS and its a little better, only been a few days.

From what I can work out it started when I took asprin everyday about 3 years ago, which that and the body eating the good bacterica since stopping the asprin and having the probotics its getting better.
I only go once a day and 50% of the time its OK. I dont have any pains. My Vit D levels have been over 100 for the past 8 years so thats good.

On the plus side with the new diet I have lost 10kg....Yeah ! goes to show how much fried junk stiff I was eating ..LOL

So with the MC can it be cured or do we just have flare ups for unknown reasons ? and they go away for the same unknown reasons ?
