Z - You sure have been through a lot with the dermatomyositis. It appears the LDN has made a huge improvement for you. Although, with the additional information Gabes provided, I can see how it can be difficult to get all the ducks in a row and keep them there.
As I said, this question is for a friend, but at the same time I am finding it very interesting. I am assuming this is what 'mast cell' issues are about. And, since I do have MC, it is good to be informed as much as possible since it may or may not apply to me. The 'mast cell' part has been hard for me to wrap my head around, but this thread is giving me a clearer picture of it.
Thank you Zizzle and Gabes (and of course, Tex).

itchy scalp
My scalp itches constantly. When I wash my hair, I feel like I rub dead skin off of it like when you rub dead skin off of old sunburned skin. I have been to the dermatologist, spent money on special shampoo and ointment for my hair that did no good at all. She really wasn't sure what the problem was so she sent me for a bunch of blood tests that she said showed her nothing. I continued to itch and never went back to her. I have tried every kind of shampoo - dry hair shampoo, dandruff shampoo, dry skin shampoo, gluten free shampoo, coconut oil shampoo, lavender shampoo, tea oil shampoo, fragrance-free shampoo. I tried treating as a yeast infection and poured vinegar over my head. Itch itch itch. I thought maybe I had lice. No I do not have lice. Scratch scratch scratch. I cannot stand to go more than one day without washing my hair or it is worse. When I get hot, I sweat a lot. No not perspire, like a nice woman from the South - I sweat like a man working construction in 95 degree heat. When I do, I come inside, stick my head under cold water, wash my hair out to get all the salt out of my hair (thank goodness my hair is very short) and cool off. That helps. But why does my head itch? Is it at all related to MC?
Gac,
I've had seborhheic dermatitis of the scalp most of my life, so does my mom, and so did her mom. We've tried every shampoo out there, with varying degrees of relief. My diagnosis of Dermatomyositis also includes terrible scalp itching in the lower half of the scalp. No one really understands why, but some suspect a yeast infection of the scalp, which would be very difficult to erradicate.

Tex, I'm noticing my itching sensations are lessening with the use of Magnesium lately. I used to have such annoying itching on the back lobe area of my head I couldn't understand what was going on...I don't find myself itching much if at all during these last 60 days after some magnesium has gotten into myself.
