Is Vitamin K2 necessary with Vitamin D3?
I've been reading a lot about Vitamin D and many sources say you should take K2 with it. Does anyone know if it's necessary? Mine doesn't have any K in it; it's just straight Vitamin D3. But one article says that Vitamin D3 without K2 can be problematic. Thoughts?

Hi Jari,
This article talks about calcification of the artery without sufficient K2 with high VitD3.

I find the D3 K2 combo from his site works well for me, I tried looking for other VitD3 and K2 separate but the prices were close after shipping or trying to make sure nothing had Soy encapsuled around it. The D3 spray and K2 capsule from that site I know is soy free, which makes it easier on my mind.

Ok, I think I found one that will work! I had already bought my Vitamin D3 and so just need the K2 for right now. How much should we take? These are 100 mcg capsules. 1 a day? Or one every time I take my vitamin D3? My vitamin D3 capsules are 2000 and I'm taking about 8000 IU a day.

Jari,
100–200 mcg per day is considered to be a reasonable dose, if you decide to take K2. But consider this:
I also read that article last fall when I had the kidney stone problems, and I even ordered some K2, but then I decided against taking it because I take Plavix for stroke prevention, so I couldn't justify jeopardizing that goal.
At the time, my vitamin D level was high, and my blood calcium level was in the upper part of the normal range, and I thought that I was taking enough magnesium, so a K2 deficiency seemed like a logical possibility.
But guess what? Now that I've lived through an acute magnesium deficiency (thanks to an antibiotic reaction that finished depleting my already-insufficient magnesium supply), and I've had enough time to analyze what happened, it's clear to me that my blood calcium level had increased not because of vitamin D, but because of a chronic magnesium deficiency. The light bulb came on when I read that a magnesium deficiency is a common cause of kidney stones.
I'm still not taking K2, but my serum calcium level is no longer a problem, and kidney stones are only a distant memory. But I take more magnesium now.
I'm just guessing here, but I'll bet a GF cookie that K2 imparts its advertised benefits only in people who are magnesium deficient. IOW, I have a hunch that anyone who keeps their magnesium up where it should be, very likely does not need any supplemental K2, no matter how much D3 they take.
Tex
P. S. Remember that the good Dr. Mercola sells a lot of supplements (and probably a little snake oil now and then ) by writing all those scare stories. You can bet that those articles wouldn't consistently have a scarey or ominous overtone if that didn't help to sell supplements.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Tex,
Thanks for your detailed response. I had thought about that and was questioning whether I needed to take yet another supplement. I am not wanting to take anything more than I have to until I have some healing under my belt and then only what's necessary. You have a good point. He is there to sell products and I have read many of his articles that sometimes do tend to be rather one-sided. I think I will continue with my D3 and my spray magnesium and call it good for now. At some point, I do want to get the B vitamins in there, but at this stage of the game, I think I'm probably doing more malabsorption than anything else so will save my money until I'm a little better healed and down the road. Thanks again.

120 caps is about $8-$9
recommended dose is 2 per day, so that is 2 months supply

and top up Vit D3 as required with a lingual version.

HI Gabes,
That's what I am going to do...once my mag levels are better and my histamine issues level out I can stop the K2 capsule and back off a bit on the spray VitD3....I'm going to keep plugging along with my regimen for a few more months.
Not sure what my deal is but I've had a waxing/waning headache on the right temporal side of my head for a good 6 days now, just enough to let me know it is there but never getting bad enough to force me to take meds...sure wish it'd make up its mind! Never had this symptom in my life and never has a mild headache lasted more than 2-3 days beings how most of them turned into migraines. Guess I'm linking it to more "niggles" of the Gluten affect.

Erica,
That's interesting that you are having headaches because I used to get them a lot! And since I've gone gluten free, soy free, dairy free, egg free, and a whole lot else, I haven't had one single headache (knock on wood)! Isn't it interesting the symptoms that vary from person to person with this stupid disease? Kind of like the foods........what works for one, may not work for others! Hang in there!

Just had to take an Imitrex, sigh.....to many weather changes around my parts in the last week...am starting to feel it is the atmospheric pressure messing with me while my body keeps undergoing gluten lessening. I have no other explanation for it. We've had thunder storm, good weather and back to thunder storm this morning and now it is sunny...Acckk I'm going to go nuts pretty soon.

it is, what it is ...
we cant immune ourselves from these triggers they are always going to happen, we just have to go with the flow of them...
slow down, rest a little, nurture ourselves a bit - guilt free
rub some magnesium oil on your temple
do an epsom salt foot soak to help draw out toxins

Thanks Gabes & Jari,
Some day I will start feeling more 'well' than less 'well, and maybe my husband wont feel so helpless as to all my ups and downs I know he wonders if I will ever have more good days and if he should be worried about me right now. I'm also sure he wonders about this whole process sometimes, I just keep telling him it is a daily process and when I feel good 'great' when I don't well it too shall pass and so sorry if I can't keep a conversation going that particular evening.
I have faith in the whole healing process, I'm just glad there is a place to say a few words from time to time without judgment, and a whole lot of uplifting
Really love this place and everyone in it
