Hard to Believe I Was Diagnosed with This?!

Post by Graceful585 »

Hi There,

I'm back...but not sure if I really have Microscopic Colitis like I was diagnosed. I had been on antibiotics (3-4 different ones) over a six month period for an infected tooth. I had the root canal closed in Feb '15 and started dealing with diarrhea for the next month or so until I went to a GI and had a colonscopy and it was determined that's what it was. He wanted to put me on steroids but everything I read about those who had been put on them (most here on this forums) would go back to having Diarrhea once they came off and so I decided to go the non-steriod route and started out with a very basic Vegan diet (which is how I've been eating for over a 1.5 years now. With my basic diet I started taking 2/daily Jarrow Formulas Sacharomyces Boulardii & MOS and one/daily Jarrow Formulas Fem-Dophilus along with various other vitamins I take along with my diet of basic rice/mushed up veggies and protein shakes and noticed a huge difference in my BM...regular stools after about a few weeks and slowly started adding in things and found my stomach didn't like mangos so I stay away from Mango...other than that I have not had any issues. All the reading I've done is that you lose all that good bacteria and I know doing the probiotics have been a huge help. I'm trying to get my son to do the same thing. He probably has IBS as he's dealt with severe stomach issues for a while, he's 24. He goes for a colonscopy as well soon due to a history on his dad's side of colon cancer. He was on antibiotics numerous times as a child for ear infections ect and they are the worse for your stomach flora and so that will be what we try first once he's had all his tests to determine if in fact it is IBS...he'll obviously have to change up his diet but adding in the probiotics to fight off those bad bacteria will be a huge help I"m sure.

All in all I'm not so certain that I have colitis to the extent that many do here but I will keep an eye on it to see if I notice any changes over the next several months with what I eat. This forum has been a huge help and will be back checking out as the site progresses! God Bless! :)

Hi,

In many cases where MC is drug-induced, just avoiding the drug that triggered it will bring lasting remission in some cases. Others are not so lucky, but it appears that you might be one of the lucky ones.

I hope that your diet continues to work for you, and you continue to improve, and your son's colonoscopy shows no problems.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
