Small to moderate servings of over-cooked, peeled vegetables are OK. It's raw vegetables with high-fiber content that cause problems.

Tex,
I tried to get the dr. to check my vitamin levels and he wouldn't. I was going to try taking vit. d3 and b12, but wasn't sure how much to take. I am using the magnesium spray and epsom salts. I have continued the multi-vitamins (Flinstones), because I had no energy at all prior to taking them about 3 months ago. I feel like now, I need to discontinue those to see if they may be hurting me more. I thought about waiting until the enterolab results before I stopped. Any thoughts...
thank you so!!

I had to read those words twice... Why didn't your doctor want to measure your vitamin levels? Did he have a good reason?crervin wrote:Tex,

Hi Martha,
I'm sorry that your doctor doesn't understand the association of certain vitamin deficiencies with MC, and the importance of maintaining a good vitamin D level especially, since we have an IBD. Many doctors are oblivious of the fact that vitamin D deficiency is at epidemic levels not only in this country, but in all developed countries of the world. And apparently they don't realize how vital vitamin D is for the proper functioning of our immune system (or maybe they do, and they consider vitamin D deficiency among their patients to be good job insurance for them. ).
At any rate, if you would like to know your actual vitamin D level before taking a supplement, you can do as many of us here do, and order your own test from the lab associated with the Vitamin D Council.
https://vitamindcouncil.zrtlab.com/
I've used these tests for years, and a few months ago, just a few days after I received my test results from the lab, my doctor ordered a vitamin D test from the lab that he always uses. I was very happy to see that the results were identical for the 2 tests.
I'm not aware of any online vitamin B-12 test kits, but these days most major cities have labs (such as AnyLabTestNow) where someone can just walk in and get same day test results, in many cases.
Vitamin B-12 is a very safe vitamin to take however, because overdosing problems are unheard of. Most of us do better if we keep our vitamin B-12 in the upper part of the "normal" range.
You're very welcome.

Lila,
The doctor said let's get the colitis under control with the budesonide (actually he noted that it would cure it). Then said once its "cured" we will worry about vitamins....
Thank you, I'll check that lab out Tex! My husband never has trouble ordering extra blood tests from his Dr. Sadly I drove 2 hours to see this dr, one way. It seems my local Dr is better, which isn't saying a whole lot at all......

Tex,
I got my test results in today and just wanted to share with you. If you can give any insight, I would really appreciate it!
Fecal Anti-gliadin IgA 22 Units (Normal Range is less than 10 Units)
Fecal Anti-casein (cow’s milk) IgA 3 Units (Normal Range is less than 10 Units)
Fecal Anti-ovalbumin (chicken egg) IgA 14 Units (Normal Range is less than 10 Units)
Fecal Anti-soy IgA 4 Units (Normal Range is less than 10 Units)
Mean Value 11 Antigenic Foods 8 Units (Normal Range is less than 10 Units)
While all of the foods tested can be immune-stimulating, the hierarchy of reactions detected were as follows:
Food to which there was no significant immunological reactivity:
corn
Rice
Beef
Pork
Tuna
Almond
Cashew
White potato
Food to which there was some immunological reactivity (1+):
Oat
Chicken
Walnut
Is that pretty high for the Fecal Anti-gliadin IgA result? I am floored by the chicken reactivity. Yesterday I ate chicken, shrimp, and white rice and got so sick. I thought it was the shrimp. Crazy, I thought anyone could eat chicken. And sadly does this mean I shouldn't eat anything with egg at all??? My brother cannot eat eggs either. He just found that out recently. I am so glad I had this test because I would have never dreamed chicken. Thank you so much for all your help!! Knowing this is really going to help! Luckily my fat malabsorption test turned out normal.

Hi Martha,
Lucky you! You're home free with the dairy products and soy results, something that many/most of us here can only dream of. Of course you will still be lactose intolerant until the inflammation in your intestines fades away, but after that you should be able to tolerate all dairy products just fine.
Your anti-gliadin result is in a range that's fairly typical for members here.
With an overall score of only 8 on the 11 additional foods test, none of those foods (including chicken) would normally be a problem. However, as many members here have found, sensitivity to eggs seems to spill over to chicken (and vice versa). And definitely keep an eye on the oats, because very, very few of us here are not sensitive to oats. The avenin in oats is very similar to the gluten in wheat, it's just a weaker protein, so it can take longer to build up a sensitivity to it. Also, most oats are cross-contaminated with wheat gluten, but most of us here even react to pure oats, that's certified to be gluten-free.
Do you mind if I add your results to our list here or here??

Compared to others - these results are pretty good
I think reacting to soy is the worst, as it is so hard to avoid compared to the others...
there are plenty of options as 'egg replacers' for cooking etc.
those that react to Chicken products, seem to do ok with turkey, duck etc. Duck eggs are reasonably available
this info gives you a good foundation for setting up your eating plan...

Thank you guys, yes you can add me to the list Tex! I really am praising God about the soy result!! My husband uses soy for everything when he cooks (I'm avoiding now though). Also, i'm avoiding dairy right now too.
Thank you Gabes, I was worried about Turkey. I will check out replacement options. I have never thought about it. Now to find duck eggs. I live in TN, maybe I can now get the farm I always wanted.......
Thank you again!

I have a question. I am feeling much better since I started the GF, SF (except in my chewable vitamins, but they are yeast free, gluten free, dairy free), EF, and DF diet. No cramping, no gas and bloating, and no nausea, but my diarrhea has gotten worse more water. It is actually dark green at times and yellow at other times. Is this normal as a part of my body detoxing? Before diet, my BMs were actually 4 or 5 on the Bristol scale, but the cramping was 24 hours of pain.
I am eating rice and potatoes, meat mostly ground turkey, Sara lee deli turkey or ham (GF free, MSG free, no fillers), or beef steaks grilled, only with salt pepper, EVOO or coconut oil, and rice chex vanilla and cinnamon, occasionally bananas and applesauce. Also, I have been drinking bone broth made from turkey. I have been GF for almost 2 mths and the rest for almost 1 month. I am a little discouraged thinking something in my diet is causing this, but if so, I don't know what to eat. My diet is very limited right now. My E. lab results only showed Gluten and chicken egg sensitivity....
On a side note, I finally got a prescription of questran. I just got it and haven't tried.
Thank you guys!

Really discouraged right now.....been up all night sick with cramping, bloating, and major D. Pain in my left side under ribs. Dark BM. Don't know if I have came down with something or what. Of course I'm the only one in family with this. Oh I hope this passes quickly! All I can say is Serenity Now, Serenity Now!!
Brighter side, finally got vit d results after about a month and it was 40.6 ng/ml. This is by taking chewable multivitamins. I'm Now taking the individual d3, may need to decrease....

Martha,
It appears that either you may have picked up a virus, or you are reacting to one of the foods in your diet. Which one, is the 64 dollar question. Deli meats are often suspect, but I am not familiar with the Sare Lee brand. For all I know, those may be OK.
It's also certainly possible (from your description) that you may have developed bile acid malabsorption. If I were in your situation I would try the Questran ASAP, to try to rule that out.

Thank you Tex, your words are always an encouragement to me! I ate a very large t-bone steak and baked potato with salt, pepper, and EVOO that I cooked. My husband's eyes were amazed when he saw me devour it. Anyway, 3 am fun fun!
Will get on questran pronto! I hated to waste it, if I had something.....

My digestive system doesn't like black pepper. I can tolerate it now that I'm in remission, but it was a problem while I was still recovering. The pepper, and such a large meal, may have just overwhelmed your digestive system and it was a bit more that it could handle at one time. Also, beef seems to be more difficult to digest than most other meats. More of us seem to have problems with beef than any other meat (while we are recovering).
My impression is that black pepper is more irritating than even red pepper (cayenne) or other chilis, such as jalapeños, because I could eat jalapeños while I was recovering, without any apparent ill effects. That said, it's usually safest to avoid spicy foods in general, during recovery.
But the presence of bile in your stool suggests that the Questran should help.
