Treese,

Those supplements are filled with questionable ingredients: magnesium oxide (causes d), maltodextrin (can cause d), polyethylyne glycol (the primary ingredient in miralax a constipation reliever) plus all kinds of unnecessary other artificial ingredients that I would hesitate to put in my body. I have taken magnesium glycinate for years without any problem. I now take 600 mg a day. Other forms of magnesium cause D for me. I just got Doctor's Best, as Tex recommended because it is the least expensive but I have also used Pure Encapsulations ( a company that uses the fewest inactive ingredients) and Kirkman Labs ( a company that is very careful to either avoid allergenic ingredients or to list them clearly).

I am just as careful with my source of vitamin D. Now Foods is a good source of vitamins as is Thorne Research along with the other companies listed by Tex and myself. I don't take any multivitamin, too many ingredients that might cause problems.

About FREEDA Vitamin D

Post by TREESE »

Thanks Jean and Tex! I have located both Supplements on the Web. I plan on buying them Today. Now...

About FREEDA Vitamin D - on their Website, they advertise several formulations. Vit D2 or Vit D3 is the first choice.
Then, the amount of IUs. I noticed you, Tex, suggested 4000 to 5000 IUs daily. They seem to sell them as either DELTA D3 400IUs or Vitamin D3 1000, 3000, or 5000.

Which Formula of IUs do you use? And do you take it Once a day? Or I/2 in the am and 1/2 in the pm?

WITH Food or WITHOUT Food?

Where do You buy it for Best Prices?

About Magnesium - Doctors Best says take 2 tabs Twice daily. Does that mean 2 Tabs in the AM and 2 in the PM? Total of 4? Or 1 and 1?

I see Vitacost sells Doctors Best Magnesium. Do You buy them from VITACOST? Is there ONE Website that sells Both?

Most Grateful to You who Reply, thank you!

Freeda only sells its own brand so you can't get both there. There are plenty of other vitamin d supplements. If you want to use Vitacost they have a liquid D3 that I have used in the past and only has olive oil as an inactive ingredient. It is D3 that you want. Another good place to buy supplements is Iherb. They carry Doctor's Best and Now Foods which are reliable brands. Always check the inactive ingredients to make sure the supplement is safe for you, even with reliable brands.

D2 or D3

Post by TREESE »

Hi, Jean! I thought D3 was the one I was supposed to get. Is it D2 or D3 that you and Tex are recommending?!

Is AntiDepressant DRUG Reaction Immediate or Over Time?

Post by TREESE »

A QUESTION on my Anti-Depressant - Venlafaxine XR (Effexor) is in a Category of Drugs that may trigger CC in some. I have been on a low-dose of 37.5 mg for some years. If it was responsible for my CC, would it have caused it when I first started taking it? Or could it still be responsible for causing it after years of use?

Treese,

I agree with Jean. I buy vitamins at various places, and it's easier for me, because I am not sensitive to soy. Soy sensitivity makes shopping for supplements much more difficult, in many cases. I often use Freeda 3,000 IU vitamin D3 (1 per day, or 1 every other day) during the warm, sunny months, and either double the dose or switch to 5,000 IU in the cooler months. But as Jean says, there are many safe options for D3.

I take all supplements with food or immediately after a meal, except for thyroid meds of course, which I take before breakfast.

If the Doctor's Best magnesium glyucinate is your only source of magnesium, you may need to take 3 or 4 per day to help treat osteoporosis, unless you are also using topically-applied magnesium. Doctor's Best has 100 mg of magnesium per tablet. The daily RDA for magnesium is between 300 and 400 mg, depending on who's doing the recommending. Spacing them out during the day is probably more efficient (for absorption), as long as you can remember to take them.

I'm not sure I understand your question about the Effexor, because if it was responsible for causing your CC in the first place then it would certainly continue to trigger the disease as long is it is being used. IOW, if it is responsible for causing the disease in the first place, then it will almost surely prevent remission as long as it is used. SSRIs and other serotonin-modulating medications tend to affect motility in sometimes unpredictable ways. They can either speed up or slow down motility, resulting in either D or C. The effect is often dose-dependent. As an example, a few members here have used low doses (10 mg) of amitriptylene to regulate (speed up) slow motility. That's a much smaller dose than would normally be prescribed to treat depression.

Timing and Symptoms

Post by TREESE »

Tex, what I meant to ask about the Effexor was, since I have been on it for years for the depression that came from the severity of Back Pain I always had to live with, I was wondering if symptoms of a reaction, like D, would have started way back when I First began taking it, or if even now, years later, the symptoms of D that have only recently started with the CC could be traced back as having been caused by the Effexor accumulated in my system over the years. I had no D when I started it. The D came only in May of This year. Although my body Does jerk at times for no reason. Like an Arm will shoot up on its own. Weird, right? Usually when I'm asleep. That has been going on since I started the Effexor.

Thanks, Tex! You have to be the most patient and well-informed gentleman I've ever encountered! And your Forum Members are fast becoming like a family! Everyone is so giving of their time and assistance!

The onset of MC often comes after long-term use of a med. Probably in those cases some other issue comes along and is enough to tip the balance, but that's pure guesswork. If you have been using it for a decade or more before the onset of MC, that probably lowers the odds that it caused the MC. The tricky part is that when the genes that predispose to MC are triggered, the genes that predispose to gluten sensitivity are also triggered in most cases. That suggests that the possibility exists that other genes (such as genes that predispose to a sensitivity to certain medications) might also be triggered when the genes that predispose to MC are triggered.

IOW, even if it didn't cause MC, it might possibly prevent remission. But again, that's pure speculation.

Thanks. We appreciate the kind words.

One of the potential benefits of removing gluten and other foods to which you are sensitive from your diet is that your depression and anxiety may diminish.

My anxiety lifted 10 fold these last few months, and I only feel some depression when my estrogen drops some or fluctuates oddly. I am very thankful that I am on some what of a regimen that helps to balance my life. I'm not perfect at noticing what ails me but I am getting better.

Buying Kitchen Equipment - Blenders and GF Bread Machine

Post by TREESE »

Good Morning - I phoned EnteroLabs and found that my Kit was finally delivered to my friend in CT. Yay!! Will pick it up today!

Tex, a Huge Thank You for the Vitamin D Book! I am underlining so much of it already, for referencing!

QUESTION - I want to try making the Hemp Seed Milk, but my Blender is ancient and I understand one needs a High Speed Blender with a strong motor to do so. Please, can Anyone recommend a High Speed Blender that does Not cost over $100 first. Then, if you know of one that Does cost more, but also serves a greater purpose than just to make Milk alternatives. But First, the less expensive Brand, please.

QUESTION - A GF Bread Machine - There is one called Zojirushi or something like that. Is that the Best one for making my own GF Bread? Anyone using it who would like to Comment?

And thank you for recommending the Book, Super Allergy Girl!! I received it yesterday! Very full of useful Info that I can read and re-read often.

PS Re-reading all the wonderful replies I have received since I joined this forum and finding that re-reading Does make it so much more understandable. Thank You ALL!!

BEFORE EnteroLab Test QUESTION

Post by TREESE »

Hello, All - I picked up my EnteroLab Kit today and read over all the Instructions 3 times, to be clear. A thought only now just occurred to me.

If I am currently on a Very basic non-dairy, chicken, turkey, and rice diet, with gluten free bread and cereal and only a few variations with Milk alternatives and boiled vegies, and Not eating dairy, wheat, oats, nuts, etc., How will the Stool Tests find out if I'm reacting to them if they are presently not in my system???

Please Reply, so I can get started without doubt as soon as possible.
