Coconut milk is listed as the first ingredient, but if you analyze the nutritional information, there can't be much actual coconut milk present. Here is the reasoning. If you look at the label, the serving size is 1 tbsp and they state that 0 calories come from fat. That is odd, in light of the fact that coconut milk is very high in fat, at 32 cal/tbsp. The conclusion is that virtually no coconut milk can be present, just enough to let them list it as an ingredient. So virtually all of the creamer is just sugar with various gums, thickening agents and flavorings with titanium dioxide to color it white, hardly very nutritious It looks more and more like all of the various nut milk alternatives are clever marketing cheats.

It is amazing to me that titanium dioxide is used as a food additive but it appears to be used here and there as a food additive. Titanium dioxide is a very expensive raw ingredient. Titanium dioxide is used to make white paint white (the expensive stuff.) Cheap white paint will be calcium carbonate and water with little to no titanium dioxide. Expensive white paint will have a lot of titanium dioxide. Titanium dioxide creates the bright white look. Cheap white paint will appear yellowish. I worked in the coatings industry and titanium dioxide was one of our more pricey raw ingredients used in paint production.

Titanium dioxide as a food additive can cause D.

I am sitting here drinking my morning coffee and the So Delicious product I use is labeled "Original Coconut Milk Creamer" and there is another label stating "We heard you!-now Titanium Dioxide Free and Carrageenan Free". So it seems some changes have been made.

As for the ingredient list-Organic Coconut Milk, dried cane syrup, calcium phosphate and xanthan gum.

Before I found this, I used to use coconut milk right from the can-which actually worked out fine.

Good for them!

Pure coconut milk is available in cans (that don't require refrigeration), and it's good stuff — it's just rich (high-calorie), because it's pure. But when it's water-ed down, it needs stabilizers/ thickening agents, etc., and refrigeration. :headscratch: If I recall correctly, Trader Joe's offers a 50/50 dilution (more or less), called Light Coconut Milk. I'm thinking that it's also relatively pure (other than added water), but I don't know if it has any additives.

Is there anyone here who has used this product?

Thanks for sharing that information.

So Delicious and Coconut Milk - Taia, Brandy, Tex, and All

Post by TREESE »

I went to the Website of SO DELICIOUS and could not find the same Ingredients on a Coconut Creamer Product that matched those that Taia uses for coffee. The Only one they list under Original still has all the earlier junk in it. However, they DO have a Note on the container's front that says, Recipe In Transition. Maybe that's what that phrase means.

Where do you buy it from, Taia? What Store Chains that you know of carry it? Shop Rite, Stop and Shop, Fairway, Trader Joe's, those are my choices here in NY.

Tex, haven't tried it from the Can. Or watered down. Is the canned Coconut Milk found in any other of those Store Chains I just mentioned above besides Trader Joe's that you know of? Have to make a List of what to buy and where it's available, so I can organize all this Info better.

Brandy, great (and scary, eye-opening) information, thanks!

Several members have mentioned Trader Joe's lite Coconut milk. I use Aroy-D, it also has no additives, it comes from Thailand so I find it in the asian section of the grocery store.

That's the one I've used, and that's where I found it, in a supermarket. We don't have a Trader Joe's around here, unfortunately.

Treese-

I have found it at Sprouts (which is a natural food store) and Kroger. I do not think you have those up in NY? I grew up in upstate NY and had never heard of either one. On that product website, there is a store finder by product so check that out using your zip code. My zip code was accurate. There is also a form to fill out to request the product be carried in a store close to you.

Hope that helps Taia

Soaking Seeds before making HEMP MILK In A Blender???

Post by TREESE »

Hello, friends who make their own Home-made Milk Alternatives!!

I bought shelled Hemp Seeds from Vitacost and want to try making my own Milk with them. Must they be soaked first? The young man in a Whole Foods store I was at today told me they had to soak overnight and sprout a bit before blending. Is that true?!

Do ANY of the Home Made Milk alternatives that come in Seeds have to be soaked? If so, How? And for how long?

ALSO - a Vitamix Blender is way out of my Price Range. Are there any more affordable High Speed Blenders that will serve this particular purpose? I don't need them to have a zillion other functions. Just this one function is fine.

Suggestions? Makes or Models? I'm looking at the Oster Blenders from Amazon.com with dual spinning blades. Anyone use them?

Thanks, All

In Colorado Springs, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, King Soopers (Kroger), and Safeway all carry So Delicious products. They also have them in several of the little mom and pop health food stores also.

Treese,

Here's a recipe for almond milk. The technique should work for making hemp milk also.

Creamy Almond Milk

Here are some more recipes for home made milk substitutes:

LINKS About Milk Recipes

Post by TREESE »

Great Links for making Home-Made Milk Alternatives, thanks! I copied them into my Notes.

I think it was Beverly who told me about the Hemp Milk Recipe, but I don't know how to contact her directly. She said just to blend the Hemp Seeds with Water and didn't mention anything about soaking them first. So, I am wondering if she just assumed I would know that and didn't include that detail. But I still don't know if that actually IS a Step and part of making the Milk.

Does ANYONE Know if Hemp Seeds must be first soaked and for how long?
