Flare while on Budesonide?

Post by cptawesome »

Hi Everyone,
I was diagnosed with collagenous colitis in June and having been on 9mg (I think!) Budesonide since. I've been keeping a pretty mild diet, but went crazy with falafel and cheese a few days ago... and I'm not sure it didn't trigger something. Totally fatigued, bloated, gassy and some D (but not 20/day)- but is all this possible with colitis while on Budesonide? Or is it probably something else?!?

Thanks so much!

Yes, it's possible. Budesonide just helps with the inflammation so you can heal and kind of masks the symptoms. I still have flares on budesonide if I eat the wrong thing or stress gets the best of me.

:iagree: with Jari. For a few people, budesonide allows them to eat pretty much whatever they want, as long as they are taking the medication. But most of us still have to avoid at least our main food sensitivities, otherwise the newly-generated inflammation will be more than the budesonide can handle.

And of course if we are not careful with our diet while we are using budesonide, when the time comes to discontinue taking it, we will soon suffer a relapse of symptoms, because our gut will not have had an opportunity to heal. Budesonide can help to mask the symptoms, but a safe diet at all times is necessary in order to promote healing of the intestines. And it takes much, much longer for the intestines to heal, than most people realize (including most doctors).

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
