antibiotics and Cdiff.....yes MC yet more torture

Post by Camie »

I had a skin tear last week that despite my endless care became infected. I took (Augmentin sp?} seven pills of the fourteen day pill treatment I had copious and unrelenting diarrhea. I stopped the antibiotic. I had two important functions to attend that weekend, one a Baptism. I called the pharmacist and checked that is as ok to take Imodium or Pepto She said take or the other.I took Imodium. Monday I woke up in the mid night just achy. Monday morning severe chills then temp of 102-101 all day. No other symptoms except diarrhea. I immediately suspected CDiff Achy bloated stomach no temp today. Less diarrhea....Could this be CDiff?

Hi Camie,

I'm sorry to hear that you had a reaction to the Augmentin. That antibiotic seems to be one of the more poorly-tolerated antibiotics for MC patients.

C. diff usually causes severe cramps and pain, unrelenting D, sometimes including bloody stool. If your symptoms are improving today, that's a good sign that the reaction was probably just due to the antibiotic. If you can tolerate a probiotic, it might be helpful to take a good probiotic for a couple of weeks to help prevent the possibility of developiong a C. diff infection while your intestines are still vulnerable. It often takes a few weeks or more for an infection to develop, and a probiotic could help prevent that from happening by helping to prevent the C. diff bacteria from attaching to your intestinal walls early on.

And there's also a possibility that you might have caught a virus at the same time you were taking the antibiotic, and that would have made the symptoms worse.

If your symptoms should become worse again over the next few weeks or so, or if you should notice any blood in your stool, it might be a good idea to see your doctor, and ask for a C. diff culture test. Otherwise, you should be fine.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
