Help! Will prednisone throw me off?

Post by Hopeful »

Just got back from the GP because of ongoing knee pain caused by overwork (gardening!). The symptoms have been pretty bad for 6 weeks. He diagnosed bursitis and when I balked at an anti-inflammatory, put me on prednisone (20mg. twice/day for 5 days), I'm wondering how it's going to affect me?

I was on budesonide for 3+ years, slowly weaned from it and completely stopped in mid-April. I am controlling all symptoms (well, 95% of them) with just diet. I just got the IgA blood test yesterday, but no results yet, with the goal of finally getting Enterolab testing next month. It's been a year since I found you guys and that's been my goal right from the first.

So, the question is, how will my body handle the prednisone? Do MC'ers have problems with this med? And will it postpone my Enterolab testing once again? How long will it take to get the steroid out of my system?

And for all you newbies out there - the diet really works! I have been pretty much symptom free since April and have my life back. In addition to the CC meds, I no longer take arthritis meds either. SUPER HAPPY that I made this life change. Hang in there. The months go by much more quickly than we can imagine and the results are so well worth it!

Hi Chris,

It shouldn't cause any adverse effects, because at that relatively low dosage level (and the combination of the short treatment regimen and the tapered doses that are used with prednisone), it shouldn't have time to cause any serious issues that might derail your MC recovery.

That's great news that the diet changes have eliminated your need to take arthritis meds. Please keep us posted on now well this works for you.

Thanks, Tex. How long do you think it will take to clear the prednisone out of my system so I can get reliable results from Enterolab? I was originally aiming to get the testing done mid-Sept. It's tricky to coordinate because I live in NY State and have to coordinate with a friend living in CT.

Thanks! Chris

That's a tough question, and I really don't know the answer (which is why I tried to ignore it the first go-round.) If that were budesionide, there wouldn't be any problem, and it wouldn't have made any difference whatsoever. I have a hunch that because the prednisone dose was low, and the treatment period was short, it probably won't affect your test results by mid-month.

Prednisone has a short half-life, and normally it will be eliminated from the body within about a day and a half. It seems to be effective for about 2 days, however, because treatments consisting of a double dose every other day, appear to work just as well (or better) than regular dosing every day.

There are never any absolutes with medications, because they affect each of us somewhat differently, and trying to define effective time limits for the corticosteroids can be somewhat tricky. Long-term treatment would be an entirely different matter, because of the need for long, slow withdrawal, but for the short (and low-level) treatment that you had, I would be very surprised if it would have any measurable effect on your test results after a couple of weeks.

Thanks, as always, for your thoughts, Tex!

I sure am looking forward to knowing for sure what I can and can't eat. I'm not interested in ever eating soy again, gluten has lost (most of) it's charm, but cheese sure would be dandy. It's the thing I miss the most. Oh, and maybe ice cream!

Chris,

Like you, I LOVED iced cream. But since I no doubt will ever be eating dairy again, I found the next best thing. It's called Larry and Luna's Coconut Bliss. They have several kinds. It's made with coconut milk, agave, and something else, but it is all natural and is soy free, dairy free, egg free, and gluten free. I am only eating the Naked Coconut one right now, but it is VERY good! It's expensive (like anything else with those labels), but well worth it! Check it out.

Jari, that is a really good one and I love coconut! But they hardly ever carry the Naked Coconut around here and I don't care for the ingredients in the others. I'll keep looking!
