Iron vs ferritin

Post by DebE13 »

I just had my thyroid labs done and asked my PCP if she could add ferritin and B12 onto the order. I'm hoping the lab is slow and my b12 hasn't been posted to my account yet. When I looked for the ferritin results, this is what was posted:

iron Detail 115 ug/dL low 42 ug/dL high 173 ug/dL
TIBC Detail 333 ug/dL Low 260 ug/dL high 420 ug/dL
% SAT 35 % Low13 % High50 %

It appears everything is within range but I specifically asked for ferritin because my labs in March showed they were at 13. Since then, I have been taking Proferrin and was curious to see if it has jumped into a more acceptable range. Do I need to make the request again? Or does this show I could back off on the iron pill?

When I saw my GI last week the nurse said they could also oversee any labs for vitamin deficiencies. I wonder if I could add the iron to that too and find out what happened to the B12 check. Things have been a bit sloppy on my PCPs end and I'm a bit frustrated. In July I got a second opinion in which that endo mentioned neuropathy and nerve damage in my feet due to a possible b12 deficiency. The nurse said they often use shots since malabsorption is an issue with MC patients. I would like to see the results on that since I have been experiencing burning in the tips of my fingers too.
