Hi all. I've been dealing with some musulosketal issues and related pain. My question is simple. I have some Voltaren ER bUt I have not taken any in over a year. In the past if I was dealing with similar issues, sometime just taking the Voltaren for 2 or 3 days could knock out my musulosketal issue and get me back to normal. Would that be too risky given that I have MC? Would I be asking for a flare? Right now I consider my symptoms controlled by diet. I'm not completely normal but usually less than 3 bowel movements every morning and only occasional watery diarrhea. Just really need the aching neck and shoulders to calm down. I value your collective experience and opinions.

Hi Gigi,
First the caveat — nothing is chiseled in stone about this disease, because we are all different, and we are all affected differently by medications. But on the bright side, a fair number of members here have used topical analgesics, including NSAIDS, without any obvious adverse effects regarding their MC symptoms. So with any luck at all, it should be safe for you.
Please let us know if it seems to cause problems.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
It's not topical its oral. 100 msg extended release. It has proven very effective for the type of pain I'm having in the past. I have some topical and have recently used it with no success. I'm very tempted to take it orally for just two or 3 days at 109 mg/day. I never used it for extended periods in the past and when I did I never noticed any gut issues while using it.

Gigi, I can't take any anti-inflammatories orally because of gastritis. I took Celebrex for years and almost went into mourning when I had to stop. It was wonderful for arthritis pain. Since then I've been using topical Pennsaid. It is a combination of voltaren cream and DMSO. The DMSO is the delivery system to get the Voltaren to where it is needed. It isn't as effective as oral anti-inflammatories, but it hasn't caused any GI upset.

Thank you for that recommendation. I will ask my doctor about Pennsaid. I have two creams that are basically the same with an antiinflammatory, ketamine, and lidocaine. One of them also has cyclobenzorene (flexeril) in it as well. The problem is the pain is not very localized. So far the doctor and my chiropractor seem to not really know what the problem is, but now that I've been dealing with it for two weeks I think I may be developing frozen shoulder. At any rate, the pain is somewhat diffuse and radiating so there's not just one spot to put cream on. But even so I have tried the creams and they don't seem to have much effect. Gigi

I've had some severe neck and shoulder pain since my thyroidectomy a few years ago. I have no suggestions for the pain but just wanted you to know that my heart goes out to you......it's a rough pain to tolerate. I don't use any meds but find deep massage is helpful.

I started taking low dose naltrexone (LDN) 10 days ago for AI symptoms, arthritis pain, fatigue. So far I'm feeling better. It is used for many reasons and for many conditions with virtually no side effects. Might be worth trying.

Gigi, I have been able to take a new drug for me... Meloxicam... for my severe crippling 42 yrs worth of R A. And no colitis flare which shocked me! I took 2400 mg more or less of ibuprofen every day since they invented the stuff. But I, too, really cried when I tried just 2 Advil gel caps recently or 400 mg & immediately my colitis was off & running so to speak! In fact, I feel it may have been all that chronic use of ibuprofen which caused me to get MC in 2014 at age 67. But since ibuprofen is also anti inflammatory, by stopping its use, I've undergone more arthritis joint damage in 1 yr than I did in the previous 42 yrs of having R.Arthritis.
Incidentally, voltaren also comes in a presciption cream tube. If I recall, the Pennsaid is more liquidly. I have a sample of the latter the doc gave me & I got the voltaren tube by ordering from Canada... Cheap. In the U.S. a prescription is required but no where else in the World. Also costs near $100 a tube in US. But neither Pennsaid or voltaren cream helped my arthritis pain but since the pills help you, the cream well might too.
