Curcumin (turmeric) use

Hi, everyone! I started taking a high absorption curcumin supplement (basically concentrated turmeric) about a month before my LC flare-up started. I use it because it helps with bladder inflammation, etc. which I was having a huge problem with at the time. It never occurred to me until now that the curcumin might have something to do with this gut irritation. I've read many studies which tout turmeric as a wonder supplement for inflammation, and there are apparently some Crohn's patients who have had great success with it. However, when I asked my GI doc about it, he said he's heard reports of it being a gut irritant and even causing ulceration in some cases. I'd hate to stop taking it, as it has helped so much with other things. But maybe I should give it a shot? I'd love to hear of anyone else's experiences with turmeric. Thanks in advance!

Good to know. I bought some from Amazon prior to joining this website. I keep staring at it wondering if I should try it or not. I guess your experience will keep me from it. Thank you for the info!

I'm ok with tumeric the spice sprinkled generously on sweet potatoes. I have this frequently. I'm afraid to try the supplement although I have a bottle in my cupboard. I have not tried curcumin as a supplement but I don't tend to do well with "one note" supplements. I think they are too concentrated for me.

I am the same way on the supplements. I do better on children's chewable vitamins. If there is a very rare side effect, I will be the one to experience it.

Interesting that you just posted this. I just last night thought I would try the supplement I had, and this morning I woke up with a lower back ache. That's the only change I made so I'm going to have to assume that it may have been too concentrated. Guess I'll hold off awhile longer and then maybe try it again. I know it can help heal the gut, but maybe it was just too much at this time.

Yeah it seems like one of those things that, in theory, shouldn't do anything but tremendous good for the body (similar to probiotics). But of course every person and every disease are a little bit different. I'm cutting it out for one week to see what happens (have to cut supplements anyway for an allergy test). I'll keep you posted!

Hi Lucy,
I tried Turmeric a few years ago, Vitacost 1,160 mg, and apparently it was waaaay too much for me, had a reaction (D) fairly soon after taking it. I didn't even realize it might help inflammation in the gut, I was hoping it would help arthritis.

Live and learn! But I can tolerate it in recipes that call for a teaspoon or so, guess it was a matter of degree.

Curcumin / Turmeric is one of those things in MC world that one person can do well on it, and another can not tolerate it at all...

Alot of natural/functional doctors recommend it for IBD's. I have tried it twice during my MC journey and could not tolerate it.

Curcumin is one of the things recommended for H-Pylori, so I wonder if it has a 'clear toxins' element, where its natural action is to clear toxins so it is very likely to cause increased BM's/D
