The importance of ZINC in controlling inflammation

Post by Zizzle »

You hear about it for battling colds, but we rarely talk about here in the context of helping control our immune response. Are any of you taking extra doses of zinc on a regular basis?

I take Zinc Carnosine, because I was Dx'd w/ an ulcer. The Japanese have used Zinc Carnosine for ulcers for many years and have great success. I can't say I've definitely seen positive results from taking zinc, but I haven't noticed negative results, either. It definitely doesn't keep me from getting a cold (I was sick all of January). But I'm assuming it helps with my ulcer (no way to know w/o another 'scope). Also, I've achieved remission thru diet alone (many factors there....)

I am a big big fan of zinc -for multiple reasons

zinc is anti inflammatory as well as helping cells rebuild (i attribute the zinc as one of the 5 things that helped me heal the leaky gut)

everytime i have had the dental work (molers removed, oral surgery etc) i swill zinc in my mouth or put zinc straight on the wound 3 - 5 times a day post the procedure.
each time the dentist/oral surgeon has commented how well my gums have healed. Faster than any other patients that had procedures the same day.
and considering my medical history they had half expected me to have issues.

zinc is proven to remove gingevitis - and linked to an article i posted on the forum a few months ago, if we remove the bacteria from our mouths, it will not go to our guts.

I have a zinc liquid - it is the same as what is used by nautropaths to do the zinc test. you hold the liquid zinc in your mouth and how long it takes for a taste reaction is an indicator of your zinc level.

Zinc is like Vit D. You can risk having too much, with careful management this is not an issue. and like Vit D3, i seem to use/need higher levels of zinc compared to a person without IBD.
Like the VitD3 - a good quality liquid zinc is not expensive and has multiple benefits - very good 'bang for your buck' for people with multiple health issues

Zizzle, thanks for posting this poll. I took an overdo look at the ingredient lists for my supplements. My "no" vote should be changed to "yes, as part of a calcium supplement."

I voted yes as part of my calcium supplement, (2 calcium tablets provide 10mg) but I also have 11mg in my multi vitamin. I also take extra if I feel I might be getting a cold which is rare. None of the articles I have read tonight say how much Zinc to take

Since my diagnosis, I went to a nutritionist. I now take a product called Pro Bono, which is for bone building and retention. It includes many vitamins and includes zinc. I assume, then, that zinc must aid in bone building and retention. This product is rather expensive, but it is free from gluten, yeast, artificial colors and favors. I will have to wait until my next Dexa scan to determine how effective it is for my old bones.

Hi,

wow, I didn't know that zinc could help me! I have problems with my vitamine levels, since I can't eat any fruit at all and I eat a limited amount of kinds of vegetables...

I should be on a multivitamin supplement, I guess?

I do wonder, do I take these daily? My levels were still normal, but they weren't great. I am going to have a vitmanin deficiency after a while...

Grts

Hi, The daily intake of zinc for men is 11 mgs/day. There are three types. Which one is the most effective. In a study from France on muscle issues they used 25mgs/day of zinc glunconate plus other vitamins and showed a 11% improvement in muscle strength. I just bought 60 mgs zinc glunconate from Swanson's thinking I could break them in half. but they were capsules. I do not want to take the 60mgs a day. Jon

I just came across this article today and it reminded me of this thread. Thought you all would find it interesting as far as "D".

I was taking a wide range of supplements up to 2010, including zinc.

I am now taking a multivitamin and considering adding zinc. The EU has funny ideas about taking supplements and they were trying to pass legislation to stop them being sold - this was the motivation for stopping. The UK is part of he EU. :-/

More and more governments continue to try to limit personal freedoms and the rights of individuals to choose. That's happening in the U. S. also, but here it's mostly done on a city or state level by bureaucrats who have aspirations to become dictators.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
