Please Advise - Added Calories Needed

Post by TREESE »

I really need help right now, so please feel free to offer your guidance.

Maybe it's a result of my last set-back which brought the "D" back and took from me the precious few (4) pounds I had added back over 3 months, in a single day, just because I had to take a week of anti-biotics for a weird infection said the ER. So, I am feeling Very disturbed inside, upset, depressed, and weakened.

The Situation: I'm still in recovery (since June). But, my enterolabs showed No Sensitivity to much of anything except Gluten.

QUESTION: Even though not in remission, can I try making a Shake with Banana, Almond Butter, maybe even Ghee, and some Hemp Seeds, for added Calories in between meals? Or at least with 1 or 2 of those ingredients????

Hi Treese,
I am not sure about the shake, but I finally gained and kept some needed weight when I added back white rice and white potatoes.

I used to scoff at Atkins dieters, but I've come to respect the power of carbs!

We are all pulling for you, and I hope you find a good solution to the weight loss soon.

Carbs

Post by TREESE »

Thanks, Betsy. I am already eating rice and potatoes as often as I can. They do make me feel good, too. But I am just so darn skinny, it's scary.

Appreciate your kind thoughts and best wishes for health! Thanks!!

Avocados are high calorie. (I never ate one until I got MC). Uncured bacon is a tasty treat. Rice, potatoes, olive oil.

Bacon and the drippings are a good source of calories, I use the drippings on potatoes, rice and fry corn tortillas in it. Adding ghee to any of your food would also give you additional calories.

Ghee and Tortillas

Post by TREESE »

You mean I can eat ghee and corn tortillas even now? And, bacon? Hey, that would be so great! Maybe I can start one of those this coming week...thanks!

do not focus too much on weight just now per say... as the gut heals, your body will put on weight.
and once Vit D3 levels and magnesium levels are improved, your gut will absorb nutrients better..

bacon and bacon drippings would be a great start.

I would be cautious about corn tortillas - as we discussed in the bread making discussion, too many processed flours can undo healing.
making paleo muffins with safe meats and animal fat in them with well cooked veges, small amount of flour to hold it together is a better option...

making soups and stews and then having small serves through the day would be better for gut healing.

Treese,

Here in Texas, most corn tortillas (especially the Mexican brands) are gluten-free. But someone mentioned that in other parts of the country, they are not always gluten-free. So if you buy any, be sure that the label specifies that they are gluten-free.

Also, do not mistakenly buy flour toritillas, because those are always loaded with gluten.

HI Treese,

I've found that now my gut is making fairly normal BM's at least 5's is normal to me now. I think Red potatoes, steamed, mashed, fried with lots of coconut oil and cut up meats, chicken, turkey, pork (all kinds) with some sea salt is a good staple for weight gain/maintenance.

As I think about putting some weight back on I have to reflect and ask myself, am I underweight? Perhaps this is the true me and my body has gotten rid of stuff, toxins that I have never needed. I was 128# in high school and to be 132# means that I'm not as bad off as I could be being 5' 9" and small-med boned. I'm trying to give my body a chance to do what it needs, knowing I'm not starving myself. We definitely eat way better than many other countries  I was afraid of myself so to speak a couple months ago, but once you start to feel better, I notice I am not worrying so much about how I used to be, and I embrace more on who I am now.

Faith....let it breath thru you,

Treese, you could also make "Paleo Muffins" as found in Dee's Kitchen, look in the index. They are similar to morning glory muffins and are GF, SF and DF. You can substitute other nut flours, other veggies (pumpkin, zucchini, carrot etc). They have about 330 calories, taste good and are filling. They are a staple when I travel and for a quick breakfast.

Gaining Weight Ideas

Post by TREESE »

Each of your suggestions has great value to me, and I thank you all wholeheartedly. The Corn Tortillas I was looking at say, White Corn Tortillas, are about 6 inches round, each, and have like 3 main ingredients; corn, lime and water, I think. MISSION makes them. Definitely not Flour Tortillas, Tex, thanks, which I did see in the store, also. Good to make a note of that for future reference. But, thanks to all of you, I am being so careful when I browse these days. Much more so than even a month ago.

Gabes, my Vit D and Mag Levels are Normal, says the Doc, from having just taken Blood Work for that. So, that's a plus for my recovery. Since I don't really fry food when I cook, if I tried the Tortillas I was looking at, I would probably mic One. But I will be aware of not getting ones that combine flours and all that. Like you said. Keep it simple for now.

Even Bacon I would mic. And I just might...soon!

My weight yeah, it's really a problem, Erica, but I do understand what you all mean when you say that it will self-correct in time, as my body heals. I just worry that the screws in my spine will cave if my bones don't keep strong in the process. But Faith and all your support will see me through!

Thank You all and have a good night!

Bacon - Cured or Uncured

Post by TREESE »

BACON - ok, I went to the store to buy Bacon today. I have not tested sensitive to Pork, so I wanted to try it.

What I found was Cured and Uncured Bacon, (also Smoked, thin, thick, low-sodium, regular, and variations on pork with turkey bacon and other things).

QUESTION: Must the Bacon be UN-Cured or CURED? Apparently, one has more nitrates and the other is free of nitrates.

Also - 1 MAYO appeared to be Gluten Free: JUST MAYO Garlic was one. Ingredients were Non-GMO Expeller pressed canola Oil, filtered water, lemon juice, 2% or less of the following; organic sugar, salt, pea protein, spices, modified food starch, beta-carotene, calcium disodium, EDTA to preserve freshness.

QUESTION: Would that MAYO be good for us with CC?

Treese,

I eat regular bacon (uncured bacon is not even available in the one-horse towns here where I live), but many members here prefer the uncured version.

For someone sensitive to soy, the pea protein in the canola mayo would be a problem. But if you are not sensitive to soy, then it should be OK. Modified food starch is always a suspicious ingredient, because it can be made from wheat (or various other starch sources). But theoretically at least, if it were made from wheat, then the labeling laws require that wheat would have be specifically listed on the label. In this country, I believe that the labeling convention is that as long as the modified food starch is made from corn, the source does not have to be listed. If it is made from something else (such as potatoes or tapioca) then the source should be listed on the label.

The consensus of opinion on this board seems to be that if a mayonnaise substitute is a necessity, then canola-based mayo is typically the best choice for those of us who are sensitive to eggs.

I actually prefer the uncured bacon, but that's just me. I found it to be the cheapest at Walmart.................but I can also get it at King Sooper's............

I prefer not to put those added nitrates and other junk in my body if I don't have to..........funny how our view about food and what we put in our bodies changes with this disease......I didn't even use to think about things like this!
