Questions About Shopping For Antibiotic Free Foods

Post by TREESE »

Last week, after my terrible antibiotic-requiring ER visits, and ensuing D returning, I started eating Antibiotic free chicken as opposed to my local supermarket's chicken which I had been eating since my diagnosis of CC 4 months ago. This week, I actually had 2 Normal BM's in a Row!! I mean Normal!! First Time!!

So - my thoughts are now turned to Antibiotic Free Food Shopping.

Question: What else besides Chicken can be bought Antibiotic Free? Beef? Fish? Eggs? Pork? How far does it go?

Question: What Stores are best in Prices that you are aware of for buying Antibiotic Free Foods?

Question: Can they be purchased on-line with good results?

Thanks, All,

I think question 1 really depends on where you live. It can be difficult to find antibiotic free pork etc. in grocery stores, but local butchers and farmer's markets usually have them.

I'm in Canada and don't buy groceries online so I can't help with your other questions.

For the record, while I do buy antibiotic free, local, free range as much as possible, I'm not sure where to draw the line with antibiotics and animals. My uncle has a small farm and he generally avoids antibiotics. That said, if a cow is going to die without them, then he will use them and reserve that meat for family or customers who aren't bothered by it. That makes sense to me. Just pumping animals full of chemicals as a preventative measure doesn't fly though.

I buy meats online. I buy in bulk and freeze. The 2 places I have used are US Wellness Meats (http://grasslandbeef.com/) and Slankers (http://www.texasgrassfedbeef.com/) You have to be able to afford to pay significantly more that you would for regular grocery store meats. I use only the least expensive cuts of these meats, mostly ground meats, and cut back on lots of other things in my life so as not to break the bank.

I've been able to find antibiotic free meats at King Sooper's (Kroger's), Trader Joes, and even Walmart. I buy my chicken at Walmart most of the time. Obviously, they also have it at Whole Foods and some of the other health food places, but you also pay more for it!

Good Places to Start

Post by TREESE »

Good...now I have places to begin my New research. Glad I started a Book on all these things. So much easier than trying to remember where to get what and how much it costs. I just write it down as I see it, and then refer back to my Book before I actually go shopping to buy it. I have about 5 different stores already in my Book for various kinds of foods, and with prices and Aisles listed, too. Some of these Stores are huge and have so many Aisles, it can get pretty overwhelming at times.

Thanks, All. Much Appreciated!

I used to have a spreadsheet where I kept track of the prices on things from different stores! I don't do it as much now, just because I'm already pretty familiar with the things I buy regularly.

I try to buy grass-fed beef and pasture-raised chicken and pork as often as I can (ideally without unnecessary antibiotics and whatnot). I like getting meat and eggs from a family at my local farmers' market. There are some cool sites you can use to search for local farmers (http://www.localharvest.org/ or http://eatwild.com/).

I also sometimes get good quality meat from stores like Target and Sprouts. I think it's just a matter of checking out the local stores and reading some labels. Most stores seem to have one or two high-quality options now, not just the factory farmed stuff.

Hello, Treese. I live in PA and the local Giant Food Store carries a lot of antibiotic free meats. I have a freezer so I stock up on them when they are on sale. They carry Laura's beef which is very good low fat & antibiotic free. I make my own hamburger patties with it for my guys when they want to grill a burger. Read the labels on everything, there are probably more antibiotic free items out there than you realize. Happy shopping!

Wonderful Ideas

Post by TREESE »

I wish to Thank you all for your Very significant and kind contributions, making this journey through CC more palatable and hopeful again!

Kristen, I joined the Farmers Market Site to get Notices on where Local Farms are having Events.

Question for Marcia: When you cook burgers for your family, do you have to use separate pans because of cross-contamination issues? I'm trying to understand HOW to cook in the Kitchen for others who don't have gluten-sensitivity issues.

Jean - I am going to look up Meats On Line as you suggested - once Winter comes, I can't always get the car out to get to a Store, so that would be great!

I do have Target, Trader Joe's and Walmart Stores not too far from me, so again, thanks. I can try them, too!

My insides are smiling, as I bow to each of you in most sincere gratitude!

I bought me a ceramic frying pan just to be safe. My old pans I'm positive would cross contaminate and so I use those for my husband (cause he still eats normal)! :)

Cross-Contamination

Post by TREESE »

Jari, can you share with me what else besides Pans you use in the Kitchen that is different from what your husband uses? I am confused about how far Cross-Contamination goes with regard to kitchen utensils and toasters and appliances and such.

What else do I need to get a separate set of? Pots, too? Silverware? Plates? A Toaster and/or Toaster Oven? Separate Sponges to wash dishes I use? Bottle washers?

I invite Any of you to also share your Tips on how to avoid cross-contamination in the Kitchen with family members who don't have CC.

Thank You,

Hi, Treese. I do use separate pans for my cooking. If I eat a burger with them my husband will grill it on aluminum foil away from their burgers. I don't know what might be sticking to the grill grates from other things that they grilled and they use a lot of spices that I can't eat. You will definitely need your own toaster and pasta strainer. Gluten can stick to things. I use the same dishes and silverware because they are washed in the dishwasher (no plastic dishes.) Don't hesitate to ask questions, that's how we learn what works best for us.

Cross-Contamination

Post by TREESE »

MARCIA, Thanks so much!

I do not have a Dishwasher, so that means I must even separate my Dishes and Silverware, then, too, I guess. Wow...

And even 2 different mixing bowls? 1 for Meat Balls that use Regular Bread Crumbs and 1 for using gluten free bread crumbs.

I am like 1 big Question Mark at times, right?! Thanks for understanding!

Treese,

I bought a ceramic frying pan for just me...........I use the same dishes, silverware, etc., but I have a dishwasher and as much as I cook these days, it runs about every couple of days.........
I bought me a new toaster (that's a must) and a new waffle maker..........a lot of my pans are glass so as long as they go in the dishwasher, I don't worry about using them for me and/or whatever he eats.............

That's about all the new stuff I have bought for now, anyway!

Brandy,

Erica recommended to me a brand called The Cravings Place (and it doesn't use eggs), but I couldn't find it around here so I bought a mix called Namaste and I used EnerG for the egg replacement, added coconut oil and water........they were very tasty and I put a little almond butter on top.......I thought I had died and gone to HEAVEN! :) It's the little things...............I did very well with them.........they are gluten free, soy free, dairy free (unless you add milk, but you have choice of adding water), and egg free (because I used egg replacement)..............

http://www.namastefoods.com/products/cg ... show&Id=23

I have since ordered some of The Cravings Place off of Amazon..........I hope I like them because I had to order them in bulk.............but I thought it would be easier to not have the eggs to have to worry about replacing...............

I gave my husband a bite and he thought they were very good and didn't taste different from regular waffles................

I bought mine at King Soopers........I've seen it everywhere.....Whole Foods, little health food places.........but they have them in the gluten free baking section in my grocery store.
