Trouble with dry eyes and nose
A few weeks ago I began to develop discomfort with my eyes which turned out to be "dry eyes". It is surprising how unpleasant this is. It then turns out that the hydration g part of the nose called "turbinates" are enlarged and blocking my airway. I had no idea such things existed. They impact on many nerves and effect the way we breathe. The result is that I don't breathe properly in my sleep and have to have humidifiers. I will need surgery for them. The rhinoligist said I must have yet more intolerances! It seems that those symptoms come and go and at their worst go along with all other inflammation.
Does anyone else have eye and nose issues like this?

I have an autoimmune disorder, Sjögren's syndrome. My eyes and mouth had been getting slowly drier, almost didn't notice it. I thought my vision was getting much worse and didnt know what was causing difficulty swallowing. I was finally tested and have a high rheumatoid factor and ANA factor pointing to a diagnosis of Sjogrens. Many of us with MC have other autoimmune diseases. Hopefully, yours is as your doctor diagnosed, and you don't have a more serious AI problem.

I have dry eyes but I had Lasik surgery 10 years ago so I'm not sure if that or some other issue is the cause. I recently tried a lose dose suppository of estrogen. I was only going to take it for a month to see if it helped my problem. Before the month ended I was seeing a weird black "hair" at the outer corner of my one eye. I went to the ophthalmologist who said he thinks it is just from aging (I'm 55) but I think there was a connection to the estrogen usage. The estrogen went flying and so far the eye seems to be getting better. I know that LC can cause eye issues so I wasn't adding fuel to the fire. I thought it might be a detached retina but after another examination 5 weeks later the ophthalmologist said it still looked OK. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I use Theratears before I go to bed and first thing in the morning and that seems to help with the dryness.

My experiences with opthamologists is that they (and probably most specialists) are a lot like GI docs in the respect that if a symptom isn't unquestionably verified to be associated with eye or vision issues by published, peer-reviewed medical research, it can't have anything to do with the eyes. And no researchers are likely to go to the trouble and expense of researching the effects of estrogen supplements on visual artifacts. There's no way that a pharmaceutical company could profit by funding such research, so no one is likely to fund it.

I agree, Tex. I find it hard to believe that the two weren't related. One side effect that was mentioned was visual changes for patients who wear contact lenses. In addition to the black "hair" that I was seeing my one eye started to twitch. That stopped as soon as I discontinued the estrogen. When I googled I did find that estrogen can cause eye twitching. Scary stuff!

Hi Greengoddess,
I also had a problem with dry eyes (at night) and dry nose: at night and in the morning my nose was always a bit bleeding. It started in december 2014 when I discontinued entocort. I had a problem with it for months. It was the reason why I was recently tested for Sjogren: negative.
In the same period, but a few months later I also got more and more joint pains.
The dry eyes problem has disappeared since I use oculotect to put my lenses in.
The nose problems were away during the summer months and are coming back just now, now the autumn starts.
In the same period my diet became more strict and that also seems to work positive.
(My doctor says it is because i'm very allergic.)
My conclusion is that it is related to my MC, but I don't know enough about it yet to have it clear.

Hi,
Its kinda an ironic topic because I had dry eyes and my eye sight started to become worse after I started the D back in 2007...off an on over the years I had noticed this and also noticed the eye sight worsening.
Jump ahead to now and after only being on this new diet and supp program for 4 months and eliminating my hormone supps just recently I don't have dry eyes, and my eye sight is getting better and I need a different prescription because my eye Dr. said my sight has improved! I no longer need glasses to work on the computer YAY!
If I keep seeing improvements in this nature as I age (I'm 48) I will honor this new diet regardless of what I used to enjoy eating
Cheers

Erica,
That's great that you've noticed improved vision while on the diet. A few other members have also reported that benefit in the past, but you're the first to mention it in a while.
One member even noticed significant improvement in her hearing.
Thanks for sharing,
Tex
