Genetic connections

Post by Sheila »

I had 23andme genetic testing years ago and downloaded my info to Genetic Genie last year for methylation information. Yesterday I downloaded all of my genetic info that 23andme collected. The information really is shocking in that there are many mutations that explain my lifelong IBS and subsequent CC, allergies, AI diseases and other issues. I have several abnormalities that make me more likely to have Crohns, intestinal problems, and scleroderma. Well, I don't have Crohns or scleroderma, but I do have Microscopic Colitis and Sjögren's syndrome, a rheumatoid disorder as is scleroderma. I don't assimilate D3 efficiently and will have to supplement for the rest of my life. I have major methylation problems with B vitamins and now take the combination recommended by Tex consisting of active and inactive Bs. I feel a whole lot better since starting them this summer. The epigenome is strongly influenced by diet, toxicity, and environmental factors. Genetics isn't necessarily fate, we can influence some of these abnormalities by correcting diet, vitamin supplementation and lifestyle changes.

For those who can't seem to get well, it might be worthwhile having 23andme testing to find out what, if anything else, is going on.

I've used different brands, usually order from Iherb. Right now I have LifeExtension Optimized folate L-Methylfolate 1000 mcg., NOW Methyl B-12 1000 mcg and Country Life P-5-P 50 mg. I take the inactive Bs in a multi-vitamin. I don't know if that's optimal 😱 and I probably should ask about that. Once I added the active B vitamins, I felt SO much better. Looking at my epigenetics, the need for both types of Bs is obvious.

Thanks! I know Gabes had mentioned that we had similar 23 & me results. I just started hydroxy b12 and l methyfolate. I'm building slowly, and looking for some energy.....

I couldn't agree more that the core issues lie in our genes. I've done the 23andMe and I have a significant number of snps affecting methylation and detox. I will say that even if you are scientifically inclined it is not easy to sort this all out on your own. I could look at the interpretation of my genetic data that was available to me online and see I had issues but it took seeing a functional medicine doctor who is versed in nutrigenomics to bring it all together for me.

Regarding B vitamins, at the recommendation of the functional medicine doc I have started using some topical supplements from a company called Neurobiologix. Check out their website www.neurobiologix.com and see their Facebook page. They have a tetrahydrofolate supplement called neuroimmune stabilizer which is a cream you rub on your skin. It also has B6. I use a sublingual B12 and they have one of those but I am currently using up my Jarrow brand. From my genes I know that I have a decreased ability to absorb B12 from my GI tract (which decreases with age as well so double whammy). So I need to use a sublingual.
