Recently Diagnosis, vacay in 2 wks abroad- start Endocort?

Post by Meggie1129 »

I posted the other day that I was recently diagnosed with CC, and was responding well to Pepto 8X a day with 1 Lomotil at night and 1/2 in the morning ( a full makes me drowsy). Unfortunately, I had a D episode last night and one this morning after feeling great since Friday. I don't know if it is because I had added an extra Tbsp of collagen to my supplements on top of the 1 I was already taking, and then at dinner the cooked veggie soup I had was a bit more spicy than I had bargained for, but again had D this morning.

If I weren't going on vacation to Ireland in 2 weeks, I would be all for the super bland diet, going GF, etc. However, the fact of the matter is that I will be abroad for 8 days, eating out 3 meals a day, driving in a foreign country where I have no idea where the bathroom is. I think I am more anxious about that than anything at this point. Do you think I should just go ahead and start the Endocort in hopes that it will help me enjoy my vacation with my husband (that we already had to postpone last year), adjust my diet as much as I can, and focus more hardcore when I return?

Thank you!

The road to recovery is often rather bumpy, especially early on. Not only do we make mistakes, but some things (such as healing time) are beyond our control. I'm not a doctor, so I can't give you any medical advice, but if I were in that situation, and I wanted to try to salvage that vacation so that I had a chance of enjoying it, I would definitely start taking the Entocort now, and cut the most common food sensitivity risks out of my diet. I would be very careful to avoid gluten and dairy 100 %. The other foods that might be problems can probably wait until after you return. But don't wait too long after your return, because your diet needs to be effective as you begin to taper the Entocort dose, otherwise relapses are common if the diet is not working before the Entocort treatment is discontinued.

If you do this (start taking Entocort, and cut gluten and dairy out of your diet), and if you can tolerate the Entocort and it works well for you, you should do well during the trip. But please be aware that after we cut these foods out of our diet, our immune system will still be on high alert and it will be actively looking out for them. As a result, as time goes on, and our antibody levels continue to decline, the taste of success inspires our immune system to become even more vigilant, and as a result we seem to react even more strongly if we slip up and ingest one of these problem foods. After much more healing though, this effect will fade away, and accidental exposures will usually result in much milder responses.

That said, a few people are able to get good control of their symptoms without changing their diet while taking Entocort, but most of us find that we are not so lucky, and we have to also make basic diet changes, even with Budesonide. Besides, if we don't change our diet, we're almost guaranteed to relapse after the Entocort treatment is stopped. And with such a short time to prepare, I would try to minimize the risks of spoiling the trip, by at least beginning the Entocort treatment, and cutting gluten and dairy out of my diet.

Enjoy your trip, and please keep us posted. I hope that this is helpful.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi Meggie,

Welcome!

Yup, do what Tex says. Take Entocort but start it in next day or two so you can make sure you tolerate it. Don't start it the day you are departing.
Ireland will be no problem eating GF. Ireland has a very large celiac population. Every pub/restaurant will have meat or fish and potato and cooked veggie option for lunch and dinner at an extremely cheap pricing. Go GF and DF now and on vacation. You will need to be GF and DF in order to get off of Entocort down the road and stay in remission. Entocort without going GF=extremely large incidence of relapse after last pill (within 2-4 weeks of last pill)

Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!

Meggie,

Off the record I didn't go GF until week 4 on Entocort due to denial. GI wise I responded quickly to Entocort. Not everyone does. Get Entocort started now and go GF and DF now and do the best you can on vacation and don't worry about things.

Bring a sweater. October is a great time to visit Ireland due to no crowds.
