PRILOSEC v. NEXIUM QUERY EARLIER TODAY

Post by CarlO »

I have been doing some detailed online research, and have found the following.

From the Nexium website: “NEXIUM may increase your risk of getting severe diarrhea. Call your doctor right away if you have watery stool, stomach pain and fever that does not go away.” Similar comments for the generic versions of both PPI medicines. So, it appears there may be no preference between these two – both bad for colitis victims.

This is a medication problem for people like me who also have GERD and Barrett’s Esophagus.

There are other interactions relevant to my own case, and perhaps to others out there who are trying to get it all together again.

There are adverse drug interactions between the two PPIs and others, such as: citalopram {an antidepressant} and mesalamine {Apriso, Asacol, Delzicol, Lialda or Pentasa} widely used in the treatment of lymphocytic colitis.

Older people like me - I’m 89 – may well have a variety of ailments and may be using a wide range of medications. The problems of drug interactions and contraindications can become a big part of the problem - - - almost as big as trying to figure out an acceptable diet.

For those needing more medication information, try MedlinePlus, at the National Library of Medicine website. The URL link is:

Good luck, Carl
