Urticaria/Angioedema

Post by Lilja »

Hi,

Two years ago, after having ingested barium sulfate prior to an x-ray of esophagus & stomach, I got a terrible reaction. After that, my whole body was covered with red spots and a terrible itching.

The itching has calmed down, but these spots still remain on my chest, but I have had so many other issues to deal with that I felt this was not important and I was sure it would go away.

I have finally understood that this must be a socalled urticaria/angioedema reaction after having ingestied the contrast liquid.

Is there anything I can do, other than following the diet and taking supplements?
(Vit D, Magnesium glycinate, active B12, B9 and B6).

Hi Lilia,

Here is an old study showing the benefits of magnesium for treating urticaria:

Investigations of magnesium, histamine and immunoglobulins dynamics in acute urticaria.

Thank you, Tex!

I'm taking two of these every day. Is it sufficient, or should I increase the intake for a period of time to get rid of the Urticaria?

By the way, is there any danger of a toxic dose?

Grateful for all your help

Lilia,

Those have 100 mg per tablet, so 2 of them would amount to at least half the daily RDA for magnesium. Whether that is plenty depends on how much is in your normal diet. Some members here are taking up to 4 times that amount each day. I did that for a while, and then I dropped back down to 2 times the amount you are taking (IOW, I'm taking 400 mg per day).

As long as your kidneys are working properly, they will eliminate any excess amount that's not needed.

Thank you, Tex. The description "Supplement Facts" on the box is confusing. I thought 1 tablet was 200 mg...

I will increase my daily intake, and am eager to see if my rash will disappear.

PS: We have now started a campaign against the Norwegian health authorities who suddenly decided that supplements are "medications" and cannot be imported from abroad. (We import supplements because our own are expensive and have low i.u.)

It appears that our authorities have been tricked by "Big Pharma", and that they have made a law that is against EFTA`s regulations. So, the battle is not over :-)

I love to be a warrior :-)

Lilia,

The labeling on magnesium and various other supplements is very misleading. If you read the fine print on the back of the label, it usually says something like "serving size is 2 tablets" somewhere near the top of the label. And then the amount of active ingredient listed in the ingredients table will be "200 mg per serving". But that means that each tablet contains only 100 mg.

I can't help but wonder what the motivation could have been for the idiot who arbitrarily decided that a "serving size" for some supplements should be 2 tablets. The RDA is 400 mg, so that would be 4 tablets.

So what on earth could the justification possibly be for declaring a serving size to be 2 tablets, which is half the RDA?

Why don't they simply state the amount of magnesium in each tablet in plain language, and then recommend the correct amount to take? I suppose they can't do that though, because it would be too simple, and besides, it wouldn't be confusing and misleading, so that wouldn't suit their purposes at all.
