Hair and nail changes

Post by Greengoddess »

For maybe 25 years I have had a fungal infection of the two nails next to the toenails. A
ALeo sometimes the toenails. I have noticed in the last few weeks that normal nail is growing again.also my hair is no longer as frizzy. Inviting comments from the hairdresser!
It seems scarcel credible that these could be related to a gf diet but maybe others have the same experience. My fingernails are also longer and stronger.

I still lose a lot of hair, but I blame it on Entocort. My nails, however, have become so much nicer to look at. Whether it is the diet or the B-vitamin regimen I follow, I don't know.

H, GG. My hair loss stopped but I'm not sure if it's from being gf or taking Vitamin D3 but I'm glad to have my hair back again. I haven't noticed a big change in my nails but my hands are no longer dry & cracked.

I think the nails are vit d because I wasn't yet taking any other supplements.

A little bit older thread, but it's something I've noticed with the recent diet change I've made with avoiding beef and dairy products, along with the old standby of avoiding wheat. My finger nails appear much healthier. One of my nails used to have pitting in it, and another had groves up the middle. I've noticed gradually both the pitting and the grove has gone away, to the point I hardly notice them today. Rather nice! and has me thinking I'm heading in the right direction.

nail and skin condition next to the nails is a key indicator to many things..

Yes. My nails began to improve with vit d. They were literally flaking away. I took v d after reading tex's book and was quite shocked when I noticed my nails about 6 weeks after! They were never like that before. Which begs questions in itself. The disappearance of the red lines was a whole year later. My son's 21 year old GF has similar flaky nails and is seemingly anaemia amd always getting infections. How many people do not absorb vit d and are deficitent in other minerals? Even young ones.

It's encouraging to hear that your nails and hair improved on Vit D Greengoddess. That's great news.

My fingernails nails have been a source of worry for me - they flake and are very thin. I keep them very short because I play the harp. My toenails are thin and sharp and have been very painful at times.

As Tex brings up, vitamin D levels are likely low for a majority of people, with modern society having us indoors most of the time. Our bodies probably believe it's always winter for young and old compared to how much time our ancestors spent in the sun. I was quite pleased about noticing my nail great improvement today. I just hadn't really looked at them much in the last few weeks, and it was an aha moment, they looked much much nicer with out the defects I normally see. I'm guessing too this is a nice sign for overall improved health.

Hi, GG! I've definitely noticed a decline in nail health since I got sick. Fingernails look more ridged than normal and chip easily. I've also had toenail fungus for years, and it seems to have gotten worse recently. My hope is that once I have these MC issues under control, a lot of other things will fall into place. It sounds like you're seeing some major benefits already from healing- that's awesome! I 100% believe that gut health dictates the health of our other parts, including skin/hair. :)

2015- LC dx

Hi,

Regarding hair and nails' changes for MC'ers, this goes for the skin as well:

I just have to look at my hands to tell if my digestion is going to have a flare up, before I have to start running to the bathroom. The hands get so dry, they change color from red to white, and look like sandpaper! You would think that all the moist you have in your body is transported to the colon, before the running starts...

Weird

Lilja.......

That's amazing to be able able to recognise when your gut is out of order by the condition and colour of our hands. I get very cold extremities during a flare up - probably due to most blood resources rushing to the scene of the flare up leaving less to keep hands, feet, etc properly served with circulation.

Yes, I have noticed the same, but after the flare is a fact.

Reading your post created an "aha" moment for me. This supports my claim that CC is a connective tissue disease.

What do hair, nails, and skin have in common? Collagen. Collagen is what makes up the matrix that holds their cells together, and it defines their integrity and their health. When our ability to properly utilize collagen is compromised, everything that depends on it suffers. Because of that, whenever MC is active, we have a connective tissue problem, which can be seen in hair, nails, and skin.
