CC now with Celiac Disease - what changes?
Greetings, All - Just had a follow-up with my GastroEnterologist who's most recent tests showed that I may actually have Celiac Disease besides Collagenous Colitis. So -
QUESTION: What changes as far as my present CC diet is concerned? Gluten Free still has to be priority, I know, but are there New recommendations now? Or, new warnings?
QUESTION: Do I go on the Paleo Diet or anything? Are there articles on this forum I can read on Paleo and CC?
Paleo seems to have lots of fruits and veggies that, if I ate now, would probably just bring the "D" back again. But yet it seems to be recommended by so many people.
Suggestions? Experiences? All are Welcome! Thank you!

Treese,
As far as you or your treatment are concerned, a celiac diagnosis is a moot point. Nothing changes except the attitude of your doctors. MC is the "deluxe" version of celiac disease, and it does everything that celiac disease does and so much more.
Treating your MC will automatically resolve any celiac issues. Celiac disease is a walk in the park, compared with MC. When you already have MC, a celiac diagnosis is "just another day in paradise".
Here's a section on the paleo diet if you are interested, and the Internet is loaded with paleo sites.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
More Care Needed
So, if I am understanding you right, I have to be far more vigilant in reading labels than people with Celiac alone, because the CC Dietary needs require MORE than to be simply just Gluten Free. There are Many Other ingredients that effect us with CC negatively, besides Gluten. And that whole cross-contamination thing, too. Wow...
Strict Paleo wouldn't really work for me, then. Not in the area of the fruits and vegies, at least. Guess I will stick to finding what works for me right now, and let things settle down before trying anything too new again.
My stomach is doing rather well these days, thankfully! Haven't gained weight yet, but not losing, either. I purchased a separate toaster for my GF Bread and a new Blender to make Hemp Milk in. Getting there!!
Thanks, TEX!!

Re: More Care Needed
The way I understand a paleo diet, which I follow, is that it is about what not to eat a lot more than it is about what you have to eat. I considered myself to be eating a paleo diet when my diet was almost entirely meat because I wasn't eating any processed food, or grains or dairy or legumes. I still do not eat any fruit (except very occasionally a few berries) and relatively few vegetables and those almost entirely leafy greens. Treating MC with diet should never be about following any one particular diet or set of foods rules. It's about doing what works best, using the best information you can find, and adjusting it to suit your individual needs. My diet is a low carb, moderate protein and high fat version of the paleo diet. It's what works for me. The past few years have been about constantly tweaking and adjusting it so that I get optimal results. I have gone from being virtually housebound to taking a 1.5 hour walk every morning early. It's close to a miracle. I never took any medications except immodium. It's all due to diet change but diet change that worked for me not someone's predetermined formula.TREESE wrote:

On Paleo or Semi-Paleo or Not
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, JEAN and MARCIA. There are just so many variables to this CC experience. I truly had thought that a probable Celiac diagnosis was going to add to the burden of CC. But apparently, Celiac is a walk in the Park compared to CC.
Paleo with tweeks, I get it, Jean. But, I think I'll keep doin' what I've been doin', until I'm outta the woods for a while. Seems to be workin'.
Ever feel that sometimes there's just too much information on the Internet for one's own good?! Well, I am sticking with You guys for my tips. You are living it every day and that's the kind of experience and guidance that's worth listening to!
Thanks, All,

I really wish all we had was Celiac...because this MC thing drives me crazy some days. Knock on wood, I'm doing good these days lately too, no WD for 3 weeks now WOO HOO!! I do get spooked when I'm not sure if I am about to pass gas and run to the bathroom with the same nightmare of 6 months ago!
I've tried to introduce pureed squash and season it with sea salt, but it makes me gassy yet, as does pureed sweet potatoes...so I continue to eat the safe foods for a while longer, but it sure does feel good to know I can sleep thru the night and can drive to work (30 minutes) and not worry about the bathroom situation. The food is a bit boring...I will admit, but not complaining at all, it has helped me heal and I am thankful every day for it.

Treese,
Sorry about the celiac dx. I 'm on a modified Paleo diet which closely resembles the Perfect Health Diet. To lower the amount of fiber from raw fruits and veggies, I eat many cooked root vegetables, and I include some rice and quinoa in my diet as grains. I also eat occasional GF baked goods, crackers and bread made with tapioca/potato starch/rice flours and almond meal. I don't feel well on a very low carb diet, and my tummy is calmer when I eat some starches with my meals. But I do focus primarily on healthy meats and vegetables and lots of soups. I do tolerate salad and probably eat too much out of convenience.

Hi Treese,
To answer your original question....the main difference is that now you don't have to lie about being celiac you can answer truthfully. I typically lie and say I have celiac as no one has ever heard of MC or CC.
I eat a cross between what Jean and Zizzle are eating. I do better eating closer to what Jean is eating but my diet blends into what Zizzle is eating.
Mom has celiac. I don't. Mom can eat a much broader category of foods than I can.

I'm reading this and kind of chuckling. Well, chuckling to keep from crying I guess. It makes me think of all the times I've gone to a restaurant and started my usual inquiry with the server. Very often, and usually with good intentions, they will ask me if I'm celiac. They think they know what they are talking about in that they think they understand celiac to be the worst form of gluten intolerance (and perhaps believe it's the only legitimate reason to avoid gluten). I have a problem in that I have a hard time not answering a question precisely. I should just say yes, I'm celiac. That would get them to accept that tiny amounts of gluten can make me ill and that I am not just following a trendy lifestyle. But I usually just say "I'm severely gluten intolerant and I cannot eat any gluten without getting sick". What I really want to say is "no, I have microscopic colitis and let me tell you, it is far worse than celiac....as a matter of fact I wish I were just celiac!" Lol! I could just imagine the look on their faces if I did!
